This retrospective by Jan Owen includes a majority of the poems from her first five volumes, with some revisions. Gathered with them is a book-length collection of new poetry, Laughing in Greek. A large and intricate world is on display, present in capsule on page 1 in 'First Love'. This poem sets going a motif of the airy light and shadow cast by memory of adult and childhood relationships. It also raises the lure of knowledge: Owen's verse is infused with the sciences, and with art, philosophy and history. Her interest is the world itself, and the words for it. When she writes a poem that dwells on a place or a painting - or a memory - it is not as a tourist impressionist but as a thinker and precise sensualist. Jan Owen has a command of wit and tone across a wide range of verse techniques, both formal and free. She moves easily between plain, oblique and surreal. Some of the new poems seem glowing labyrinths of thinking and language - led through by a wonderful clarity of voice and rhythm. Poems 1980-2008 was shortlisted and 'highly commended' for the 2009 Judith Wright Prize in the A.C.T Awards.

Fighting Forward

..".loss is like a rock tossed into the middle of a placid pond: the waves go on and on, reaching far beyond the initial impact, touching places within my life I never foresaw or imagined. And it has left me forever altered." Jan Owen was widowed at the age of forty-eight. In this book of essays, she relates her story of the loss of her husband of thirty years while sharing honestly about her journey from crippling grief to a beautiful and hopeful life. Fighting Forward: A Widow's Journey from Loss to Life bravely explores the heartaches and questions of widowhood and grief on a deeply personal level while offering us the hope and possibility of a new, even joyous, life. Jan encourages us to choose to live again even when we cannot see the future, to allow ourselves to be enlarged by our experience even as we sit in the dark. We must choose to keep marching on, fighting forward as we strive to build a new life full of hope and purpose.

The Offhand Angel

Poetry. Jan Owen writes of childhood and nature, of relationships, travel, art and science. Many poems in THE OFFHAND ANGEL shuttle between widely differing perspectives: the local and the exotic, the cosmic and the microcosmic, the physical and the metaphysical. A sense of transience and loss is balanced by the sensuousness and musicality of her work, and by a driving curiosity about the world.
