Central Europe as a Meeting Point of Visual Cultures
The end of World War I in 1918 meant a radical transformation of Central Europe: the multicultural space of former empires became divided into individual nation-states. This altered all spheres of life, deeply impacting the discipline of art history as well. The cosmopolitan vision of art history developed by figures from the Vienna School such as Franz Wickhoff and Alois Riegl was gradually replaced by new self-referential narratives. This nationalist tendency was reinforced by the division of Europe after World War II. In the wake of Jiří Kroupa’s pioneering studies, this volume takes a truly transcultural approach to art produced in the Central European region from the 12th to the 20th century. Freed from national prejudices, a region shaped by the constant movement of people, ideas, and objects emerges.
Forging Architectural Tradition
During the nineteenth century, a change developed in the way architectural objects from the distant past were viewed by contemporaries. Such edifices, be they churches, castles, chapels or various other buildings, were not only admired for their aesthetic values, but also for the role they played in ancient times, and their role as reminders of important events from the national past. Architectural heritage often was (and still is) an important element of nation building. Authors address the process of building national myths around certain architectural objects. National narratives are questioned, as is the position architectural heritage played in the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries.

Die Bibliografie stellt mit über 6.000 Titeln die Forschungsbreite zu dem Leben und Werk der Barockbaumeister Johann Bernhard und Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach. Die vor über 35 Jahren erschiene erste Bibliografie zu Fischer von Erlach konnte damit um Umfang mehr als verdreifacht werden; sie ist thematisch und chronologisch geordnet und nimmt auch sämtliche allgemeinen Beiträge zu österreichischen Barockarchitektur auf. Sowohl dem Einsteiger wie den Fachleuten wird damit erstmals wieder ein wichtiges Instrumentarium zur Recherche an die Hand gegeben. Die Bibliografie wird durch einen Aufsatzband ergänzt, der ältere und neuere Beiträge von Andreas Kreul zu Fischer von Erlach versammelt.
