If this review is in fact based on a fair cross section of the literature it is clear that the main stimulus for research into the action of drugs upon the foetus has come from clinical obstetrics. Although there is a large volume of work concerning drug effects upon the foetus it has been relatively piecemeal. Thus the whole field is open for systematic, fundamental, and quantitative investigation.
