Clinical Biochemistry

The textbook is essential for medical students and can serve as a reference for young doctors in postgraduate training. It covers all major topics of clinical biochemistry: from preanalytical issues, acid-base balance and ion dysbalances, via special topics (diabetes mellitus, gastrointestinal tract or laboratory investigation of important organs - liver, kidney, heart) to therapeutic drugs monitoring and trends in laboratory medicine. Authors are leading experts in clinical biochemistry. The topics are presented in readable and comprehensive form and are suplemented by intractive e-learning course with control quizzes.

Pathobiochemistry of Metabolic Disorders

Pathobiochemistry of Metabolic Disorders

Pathobiochemistry means biochemistry of disease. In the curriculum of medical studies it may serve as a useful and highly enjoyable “bridge” between the basic science of the first years, and the clinical training later. Practical limitations dictate that from a vast area of human pathology a careful selection of topics must be made. The eleven chapters of this book deal with the basics of acid-base balance disorders, inflammation, reactive oxygen species and antioxidant defense, non-enzymatic glycations, atherosclerosis, metabolic syndrome, ischemia/reperfusion of the heart, protein misfolding disorders, ageing, and consequences of alcohol abuse. The selection covers some pathogenetic processes behind several important medical problems of the present. Further, it more or less implicitly points to the inner causes of diseases. The inner maintenance of body structural and chemical integrity is costly and has its limits that regularly get exceeded, which is the ultimate reason for ageing and contributes to many, often also age-related, civilization diseases.

Liver Regeneration

Liver Regeneration

Doctors and scientists have been aware of the "phenomenom" of liver regeneration since the time of the ancient Greeks, illustrated by the mythic tale of Prometheus' punishment. Nevertheless, true insight into its intricate mechanisms have only become available in the 20th century. Since then, the pathways and mechanisms involved in restoring the liver to its normal function after injury have been resolutely described and characterized, from the hepatic stem/progenitor cell activation and expansion to the more systemic mechanisms involving other tissues and organs like bone-marrow progenitor cell mobilization. This book describes some of the complex mechanisms involved in liver regeneration and provides examples of the most up-to-date strategies used to induce liver regeneration, both in the clinic and in the laboratory. The information presented will hopefully benefit not only professionals in the liver field, but also people in other areas of science (pharmacology, toxicology, etc) that wish to expand their knowledge of the fundamental biology that orchestrates liver injury and regeneration.

Frontiers in Antioxidants Research

In biological systems, the normal processes of oxidation (plus a minor contribution from ionising radiation) produce highly reactive free radicals. These can readily react with and damage other molecules. In some cases the body uses free radicals to destroy foreign or unwanted objects, such as in an infection. However, in the wrong place, the body's own cells may become damaged. Should the damage occur to DNA, the result could be cancer. Antioxidants decrease the damage done to cells by reducing oxidants before they can damage the cell. Virtually all studies of mammals have concluded that a restricted calorie diet extends the life span of mammals by as much as 100%. This remarkable finding s...

Special Problems in Hemodialysis Patients

This book provides an overview of special cases in hemodialysis patients. Authors have contributed their most interesting findings in dealing with patients suffering of other diseases simultaneously, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other health problems. Each chapter has been thoroughly revised and updated so the readers are acquainted with the latest data and observations in these complex cases, where several aspects are to be considered. The book is comprehensive and not limited to a partial discussion of hemodialysis. To accomplish this we are pleased to have been able to summarize state of the art knowledge in each chapter of the book.

Uremic Toxins

Reviews all the latest basic and clinical research findings With contributions from leading international experts in the field, this book is dedicated to all facets of uremic toxins research, including low molecular weight solutes, protein-bound solutes, and middle molecules. Moreover, it covers everything from basic mass spectrometry research to the latest clinical findings and practices. Uremic Toxins is divided into three sections: Section One, Uremic Toxins, explores the definition, classification, listing, and mass spectrometric analysis of uremic toxins Section Two, Selected Uremic Toxins, describes key uremic toxins, explaining chemical structures, metabolism, analytical methods, plas...

This remarkable finding suggests that food is actually more damaging than smoking. As food produces free radicals (oxidants) when metabolised, antioxidant-rich diets are thought to stave off the effects of ageing significantly better than diets lacking in antioxidants. The reduced levels of free radicals, resulting from a reduction in their production by metabolism, is thought to be a major cause of the success of caloric restriction in increasing life span. Antioxidants consist of a group of vitamins including vit

Stomatologie

Stomatologie je lékařským oborem, který se zabývá prevencí, diagnostikou, léčením a výzkumem onemocnění a vývojových poruch zubů, chrupu a všech tkání dutiny ústní, jakož i orgánů a tkání topograficky s ní souvisejících. Monografie obsahuje základní informace, které popisují a zatřiďují současné pracovní postupy a terapeutické metody pro obor zubní lékařství. Kniha koncepčně vychází ze současných vědeckých poznatků a z mezinárodně uznávaných programů zvyšování kvality orálního zdraví. Učebnice je určena studentům medicíny a mladým lékařům, zdravotním sestrám, zubním laborantům a hygienistkám jako stručný průvodce oborem.
