Ajanta ist daher eine der wenigen Kunststatten, bei der wir nicht auf Zufallsfunde angewiesen sind, sondern die Moglichkeit erhalten, in die Vorstellungswelt der ganzen Epoche einzudringen. Die Arbeit versteht sich als komplementar zu dem Werk Dieter Schlingloffs*, behandelt aber ein ganz anderes, zum Teil erstmalig erschlossenes Bildmaterial, namlich die nichtnarrativen Malereien. Die Aufgabe des Buches ist die Deutung der in Ajanta dargestellten Themen und ihre Erklarung mittels literarischen Quellen und Vergleiche mit den Darstellungen anderer Kunstregionen. Das erschlossene Bildmaterial ist in 48 Gruppen nach Inhalten in aufsteigender Reihenfolge vom Profanen zum Heiligen geordnet, d.h. von den rein ornamentalen Motiven uber die umfangreichen Darstellungen der Genien bis hin zu der Visualisierung der buddhistischen Dogmatik.
