"It's better to be a pirate than join the Navy." -Steve Jobs Is it better to line up in rows, with starched shirts and a salute? Or would you rather be a pirate-nonconformist and unafraid? For Steve Jobs, the answer was obvious. In 1983, pushing to release the history-making Macintosh, his team raised a skull-and-crossbones flag over the Cupertino headquarters. As pirates, they staked out a territory where risk-taking ruled. In Pirate Spirit, Jay Elliot, a former Apple executive and Jobs' close collaborator, recounts those heady days and examines the renegade culture that sustained their creativity and inspired new generations of entrepreneurs. With insights from Mark Cuban, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Laurene Jobs, and other Silicon Valley pioneers, the book reveals how anyone can: Channel their inner pirate * Collect the right crew * Lead a band of rebels to innovation instead of anarchy * Banish bureaucracy * Keep the startup spirit alive * And more On the openocean, a small, determined squad in a sloop can outmaneuver and overtake the largest vessel. Be the pirate!

Handbook of Clinical Behavioral Pediatrics

Since 1978, the editors have collaborated on several research projects and spent many hours at conventions discussing research, graduate education, and patient care. The idea for this volume arose when we both concluded that the area of behavioral pediatrics needed a "how to" book. Several important scholarly re views had recently appeared. They presented excellent summary information concerning the general assumptions and theories underlying the area of behav ioral medicine with children. But these volumes devote very little attention to the application of clinical methods. What was needed, we thought, was a book that would allow graduate students and practicing clinicians the opportunity to peer into the minds of eminent practitioners and understand their thinking. Thus the book was conceived. Editing books represents a special kind of challenge. One has to "sell" an idea to a group of distinguished colleagues. They have to believe enough in that idea to devote the considerable time and effort necessary to bring thought into reality. In this case, there were two ideas we tried to sell to our colleagues.

The Third Eye is all about learning—systems, system structure, systems influencers, situations, behaviours, and organizational learning practices. Though problem solving is the skill most in demand in the 21st century, we have to let go of the old methods of solving problems and learn the systemic approach. Unless you error-proof your systems, all other error-proofing efforts are of no use. To do this, it is necessary to understand the psychology of your systems, i.e. how systems behave under different influences and influencers. Don’t just give solutions, provide systemic solutions. Remember every non-systemic solution incurs a debt to the system’s way of solving problems and the systems know how to get us to repay it. Keen on learning only one skill? Learn to solve problems systemically.
