Origins and Successors of the Compact Disc

In March 1979, a prototype of a ‘Compact Disc (CD) digital audio system’ was publicly presented and demonstrated to an audience of about 300 journalists at Philips in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. This milestone effectively marked the beginning of the digital entertainment era. In the years to follow, the CD-audio system became an astonishing worldwide success, and was followed by successful derivatives such as CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, and recently Blu-ray Disc. Today, around the thirtieth anniversary of the milestone, it is taken for granted that media content is stored and distributed digitally, and the analog era seems long gone. This book retraces the origins of the CD system and the subsequent evolution of digital optical storage, with a focus on the contributions of Philips to this field. The book contains perspectives on the history and evolution of optical storage, along with reproductions of key technical contributions of Philips to the field.

Integrates rational approximation with adaptive filtering, providing viable, numerically reliable procedures for creating adaptive infinite impulse response (IIR) filters. The choice of filter structure to adapt, algorithm design and the approximation properties for each type of algorithm are also addressed. This work recasts the theory of adaptive IIR filters by concentrating on recursive lattice filters, freeing systems from the need for direct-form filters.;A solutions manual is available for instructors only. College or university bookstores may order five or more copies at a special student price which is available upon request.

Digital Filters and Signal Processing

Digital Filters and Signal Processing, Third Edition ... with MATLAB Exercises presents a general survey of digital signal processing concepts, design methods, and implementation considerations, with an emphasis on digital filters. It is suitable as a textbook for senior undergraduate or first-year graduate courses in digital signal processing. While mathematically rigorous, the book stresses an intuitive understanding of digital filters and signal processing systems, with numerous realistic and relevant examples. Hence, practicing engineers and scientists will also find the book to be a most useful reference. The Third Edition contains a substantial amount of new material including, in part...

Data Communications Principles

This unique text, for both the first year graduate student and the newcomer to the field, provides in-depth coverage of the basic principles of data communications and covers material which is not treated in other texts, including phase and timing recovery and echo cancellation. Throughout the book, exercises and applications illustrate the material while up-to-date references round out the work.

Source and Channel Coding

oW should coded communication be approached? Is it about prob H ability theorems and bounds, or about algorithms and structures? The traditional course in information theory and coding teaches these together in one course in which the Shannon theory, a probabilistic the ory of information, dominates. The theory's predictions and bounds to performance are valuable to the coding engineer, but coding today is mostly about structures and algorithms and their size, speed and error performance. While coding has a theoretical basis, it has a practical side as well, an engineering side in which costs and benefits matter. It is safe to say that most of the recent advances in information theory and co...

Multimedia Programming - A Practical Approach

Multimedia Programming: A Practical Approach is a maiden treatise on the core concepts of multimedia programming standards and practices catering to the different branches of Engineering disciplines of Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Electrical Engineering of various Indian and Foreign Universities. The book deals with an in-depth analysis of the facets of hands on of multimedia programming essentials with reference to the different multimedia file standards in existence. Each chapter of the book starts with a brief introduction of the topic and ends with review questions and programming exercises. The fundamental concepts of multimedia programming with Virtual Reality Markup Language (VRML) essentials are explained with suitable illustrations and real life examples. The book describes the core concepts of multimedia basics, multimedia file standards with reference to discrete and continuous media, multimedia devices and future of multimedia in the form of VRML with illustrative programming examples. The distinctive feature of this book is the assay of real-time programming examples in Win 32 API programming platform.

This collection of contributions is offered to Jack van Lint on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday and appears simultaneously in the series Topics in Discrete Mathematics and as a special double volume of Discrete Mathematics (Volumes 106/107). It is hoped that the papers selected, all written by experts in their own fields, represent the many interesting areas that together constitute the discipline of Discrete Mathematics. It is in this sphere that van Lint has become the acknowledged master and this expansive volume serves to demonstrate the enormous significance he has had on the development of Discrete Mathematics during the last 30 years.
