Annonces, Affiches et Avis Divers was created in 1773 by the French administration for the islands of Mauritius and Reunion. Since its independence from Britain in 1968, Mauritius has known a very rich media history with an impressive number of publications and a relatively good level of press freedom. However, many challenges remain. Confrontational episodes in the relationship of the local media with the political sphere, the rise of sensationalist journalism, increased concentration of ownership in the industry as well as market uncertainties have taken their toll on a profession which often prides itself ...

Let’s Talk About Life

Attempting to categorize Ruby Kapoor is akin to using one colour to describe a rainbow. After 13 years in Mauritius, she is seeking and succeeding in finding new ways of surpassing herself. No medium seems too daunting, no idea too esoteric for this lady. Those who have read her all encompassing columns in I' express outlook will instantly get the gist of the above. Yet, over and above the warm and encouraging offerings that Ruby Kapoor has so gracefully contributed to Outlook during the supplement's short lifetime, what strikes one most is her boundless self-confidence. This book examines the history and contemporary living conditions of Chagossians who were evicted from the Chagos archipelago in the Indian Ocean to make way for a strategic U.S. military base. Initially part of colonial Mauritius, Chagos was integrated into a new colony named the British Indian Ocean Territory in 1965. In 1966, Great Britain transferred control of Diego Garcia, the largest Chagos island, to the Americans under a fifty year lease. The expulsions which followed were designed to satisfy the U.S. demand for an unpopulated territory. The Chagossians were thus forced to resettle in Mauritius and the Seychelles, where livelihoods are poor and marginalized. The Chagossians are currently engaged in a campaign seeking right of return to the archipelago and recognition as a people forced to live in diaspora.
