Testing and Characterisation of Earth-based Building Materials and Elements

This book presents the work done by the RILEM Technical Committee 274-TCE. It focuses on the estimation of the parameters which are necessary to properly design earthen constructions. It provides a compilation of the value classically obtained for the key parameters of earthen materials, a pedagogical presentation of the main testing procedures for earthen materials, their advantage and their drawback and an overview of most standards on earthen materials, whatever their origin and their language. The book is divided into eight chapters. After a general introduction on earthen materials and constructions, the state of the art on the material characterisation technics, the assessment of hygrothermal performance, the mechanical behaviour, seismic resistance and the durability will be presented, each in a dedicated chapter. On the basis of these last chapters, a critical review of the standards which are used for earthen material will be presented in the last chapter. The last chapter is dedicated to the analysis of the environmental potential of earth-based building materials.

Born during the Great Depression, Jean-Claude Morel is an Everyman, an ordinary Montreal construction worker who has built the city with his own hands, digging its metro, creating islands, and weaving expressways through the downtown core. But the progress has come at a cost: neighbourhoods have been razed, streets wiped off the map, and the Morel family expropriated. Teeming with life, Morel uncovers a story of Montreal that has been buried under years of glitzy urban renewal and modernization. This intricately constructed literary novel is a profoundly human portrait of one man and his time, a monument to a city, and a toast to days gone by.

Marlene D. Morèl is an emotionally troubled Chinese-American teenage girl growing up in Utopia-Zurich, Switzerland. To avoid her drunk, abusive father, who is the Swiss version of Oscar Wilde and her American mother, a has-been soap opera star, who has no interest in her chubby, slant-eyed daughter, Marlene spends most of her time hiding inside the warehouse, which houses the family business, Morèl Theatrical Costumier. Preferring life among mannequins, props and costumes, Marlene has created over the years, a life of make-believe, where her imagination runs rampant. Trouble is, unbeknownst to her, she's also created an alter-ego named Bad Egg who happens to be a 'toon' and who wants to el...

Take a Detailed Look at the Practice of Drystone Retaining Wall Construction Drystone retaining walls make very efficient use of local materials, and sit comfortably in their environment. They make an important contribution to heritage and to the character of the landscape, and are loved by many people who value the skill and ingenuity that has gone into their construction, as well as simply how they look. And yet, in engineering terms, they are complex. They can deform significantly as their loading changes and their constituent stones weather. This gives them ductility—they deal with changes by adapting to them. In some ways, they behave like conventional concrete retaining walls, but in...
