The John King family of Good Hope lived at a peaceful, gentle time commonly called 'the good old days.' Their mostly self-sufficient farm provided their food, except for flour and sugar. Crime was low, so the Kings seldom locked a door. Mama pointed out, however, that storm clouds come to everyone. Her children were so young and optimistic that they did not believe her. Trouble did come in the form of sickness, death, share croppers' dissatisfaction and the depression. With love and hard work, the Kings survived. Then, World War II loomed on the horizon. They did not realize that their way of life was about to change forever.
