Stochastic Processes for Spatial Econometrics

This monograph presents a general methodology which is shown to be valid in the analysis of spatial point structures and that is certainly easier to use by non-expert researchers coming from other applied sciences than other much modern techniques. We suggest that the local conditioning approach has the advantage that it is statistically efficient, easy to correct for edge-effects and provides similar results than other (more complicated) likelihood-based methods. We show a mathematical justification to prove that any purely inhibitory pairwise interaction point process (pipp) can be obtained as the limit of a sequence of auto-Poisson lattice schemes and within this context we develop the pseudolikelihood estimating equations. We particularly focus on developing a Monte Carlo simulation study to analyze the behaviour of the parameter s of a particular pipp model derived using this technique. We also stress that this methodology has a wide range of applications in many fields, particularly in economy and demography.

United Nations Conference on Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks

  • Categories: Law

Probably the best record of the conference available now or in the future, because financial constraints prevented the UN Secretariat from issuing summary verbatim records. The conference was called for at the 1992 environmental conference in Rio to address problems arising from fishing fleets traveling far from depleted fisheries near home in pursuit of fish, and the increasing adoption of 200-mile economic zones by countries. Includes selected documents from the six sessions between April 1993 and August 1995, the agreement for the implementation of the provisions of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982 relating to the conservation and management of straddling and highly migratory fish stocks, the final act of the conference, a list of documents, and a subject index. Sartre, Self-formation and Masculinities

Published on the occasion of Sartre's Centenary, this book helps to understand the man behind the work, offering a psycho-social analysis of Jean-Paul Sartre with an emphasis on his masculinity. It sets out to contextualize Sartre in terms of his psycho-sexual formation and processes of self-constitution in view of his childhood. The main period under detailed study is 1905-1945, before Sartre became the Sartre. It concentrates on his early childhood, his teenage years in La Rochelle, the years at the Ecole Normale, and the first few years of his adulthood, with specific attention on the war years. An analysis of Sartre's relationships follows, with Simone de Beauvoir and other women and men (including love and sex), before a postscript covering the period 1973-1980. This essay is not a reductive account. It tells the story of Jean-Paul Sartre, from the inside out, so that the achievements of one of the major intellectuals of the 20th Century can be measured against his own internal struggles.

In Paris, American film student Adele Longet is murdered. Aristotle Witzer, a Defense Analyst new to America's Paris embassy, gets a late night call to get a police report. In Paris Catacombs, underground rave parties blaze until dawn with ecstasy, sex and cinema as Witzer scrambles through this subterranean web - the haunt of French kings, the sanctuary for Resistance Fighters and the domain of partying 'Cataphiles'. Who murdered Adele? Unexposed French collaborators? Drug dealers? Criminal kingpins? He can trust no one. On a hot summer night, when a famed music festival shuts down the City of Light, he searches for a drug lab with answers to Adele's murder - and the clue to his own daughter's kidnaping - before he loses her to "A Cold Death." Political Ecumenism

Adams examines the contributions of such major Français libres as René Cassin, Pierre Mendès France, and Jacques Soustelle and explores de Gaulle's troubled relations with Churchill and Roosevelt. The opportunity for Gaullists to offer full membership to the fourth religious family, Algeria's Muslim majority, following the liberation of French North Africa is also considered. In an epilogue, Adams reflects on the impact of Free France's political ecumenism in the postwar era.

International Seabed Authority

Twenty years ago, on 16 November 1994, marks the entry into force of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, adopted in 1982, and consequently, the inauguration of the International Seabed Authority, established in Jamaica. This commemorative volume traces the history, developments and structure of this international organization, looking at its achievements as it carries out its mandate to manage the mineral resources of the seabed beyond the limits of national jurisdiction, for the benefit of the "common heritage of mankind."

The French Resistance

Olivier Wieviorka’s history of the French Resistance debunks lingering myths and offers fresh insight into social, political, and military aspects of its operation. He reveals not one but many interlocking homegrown groups often at odds over goals, methods, and leadership. Yet, despite a lack of unity, these fighters braved Nazism without blinking.
