The Journals of Jeffery Amherst, 1757-1763
As commander in chief of His Majesty’s forces in North America, Jeffery Amherst helped the British acquire Canada in 1760. Like many military officers, Amherst kept personal journals of his activities. Developed at greater leisure, and with help from his brother and staff, Amherst’s journals are replete with lists, diagrams, and compendia that explain Amherst’s time as commander in chief in detail.

Jeffery Amherst to John Hunter Regarding the Gunner of the Sloop Shark, 7 August 1777
First page signed by Charles Cocks and Benjamin Langlois, of the Office of Ordnance. Includes a signature Amherst, Jeffrey Amherst, a general in the British army (no first name is written). Certifies that George Pratt, gunner of the sloop Shark, has given an account of the expense of gunner's shares from 6 May to 19 November 1776. A note on second page, signed by Robinson N. Bowman, states that the certificate for Pratt is on the other side and informs that Mrs. Pratt will call on him for her marriage certificate. Also mentions paying a man named Clark his wages.
