Tropical Diseases, An Issue of Infectious Disease Clinics - E-Book

Tropical diseases pose an increasing problem for US and international travellers who travel to tropical regions. Physicians need to be aware of the wide spectrum of tropical, infectious, and parasitic diseases that patients may be exposed to. This issue of Infectious Disease Clinics includes articles written by global experts and includes topics such as range/classification of tropical diseases, venomous bites and stings, malaria, and bacterial gastrointestinal infections.

Advances in Parasitology

First published in 1963, Advances in Parasitology contains comprehensive and up-to-date reviews in all areas of interest in contemporary parasitology. Advances in Parasitology includes medical studies on parasites of major influence, such as Plasmodium falciparum and trypanosomes. The series also contains reviews of more traditional areas, such as zoology, taxonomy, and life history, which shape current thinking and applications. Eclectic volumes are supplemented by thematic volumes on various topics, including control of human parasitic diseases and global mapping of infectious diseases. The Biology of Echinostomes

The Biology of Echinostomes

Echinostomes are medically- and veterinary-important parasitic flatworms that invade humans, domestic animals and wildlife and also parasitize in their larval stages numerous invertebrate and cold-blooded vertebrate hosts. The interest in echinostomes in parasitology and general biology comes from several areas: (1) Human infections; (2) Experimental models; (3) Animal infections; (4) Systematics. The application of novel techniques is moving the echinostomes to the frontline of parasitology in fields such as systematics, immunobiology in vertebrate and invertebrate organisms and proteomics among others. The Biology of Echinostomes demonstrates the application of new techniques to a group of...

Current efforts to limit the ravages of schistosomiasis are pushing the world closer to eliminating a chronic infection that has been associated with human life in the tropics since time immemorial. This notwithstanding, the disease remains a scourge for large populations in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, and the main part of this book is made up by papers dealing with its current distribution, discussing ways and means to establish and implement improved control approaches. While chemotherapy limits the symptoms caused by schistosomiasis, the number of infected people will not decrease until the parasite's life cycle is interrupted. To that end, some papers focus on ...

Tenth meeting of the Working Group on Monitoring of Neglected Tropical Diseases Drug Efficacy, Ghent, 21 June 2023

Helminth control programmes based on preventive chemotherapy against soil?transmitted helminthiases and schistosomiasis are continuing to scale up. In 2021, the global coverage of preventive chemotherapy reached 62.2% for soil-transmitted helminthiases and 40.3% for schistosomiasis; more than 650 million individuals were treated with albendazole and mebendazole for soil-transmitted helminthiases and with praziquantel for schistosomiasis. The expansion of preventive chemotherapy can potentially risk triggering anthelminthic drug resistance and put at stake the long-term public health benefits of the intervention. Antimicrobial resistance is not yet a public health problem in human helminthias...

Paediatric Formulation

The development of paediatric medicines can be challenging since this is a different patient population with specific needs. A medicine designed for use in paediatric patients must consider the following aspects: patient population variability; the need for dose flexibility; route of administration; patient compliance; excipient tolerability. For example, the toxicity of excipients may differ in children compared to adults and children have different taste preferences. Globally, about 75% of drugs do not carry regulatory approval for use in children; worldwide, many medications prescribed for the treatment of paediatric diseases are used off-label, and less than 20% of package inserts have sufficient information for treating children. This book provides an update on both state-of-the-art methodology and operational challenges in paediatric formulation design and development. It aims at re-evaluating what is needed for more progress in the design and development of age-appropriate treatments for paediatric diseases, focusing on: formulation development; drug delivery design; efficacy, safety, and tolerability of drugs and excipients.

Neuroendocrine Tumor

While the incidence rate of neuroendocrine tumours has been increasing, the survival rate has not. Therefore, there is a great need for state-of-the-art research and new treatment protocols. The chapters in this book contribute to that debate and will be required reading for both researchers and healthcare practitioners, as it offers both overviews of the condition and specialized contributions. Topics covered include the association between chronic inflammation and gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours, or GEP-NETs. GEP-NETs are also addressed in a chapter on their circulating markers, which can help in diagnosing this hard to detect condition. One chapter covers the role of Chromogranin A, while another addresses the diagnosis and management of neuroendocrine carcinomas in cases where the primary site is unknown.
