Richard Wright's Native Son
An Afro-Americanist, Ana M Fraile currently teaches postcolonial literatures at the University of Salamanca, Spain. Her more recent publications include the book Planteamientos esteticos y politicos en la obra de Zora Neale Hurston (2003); chapters about Zora Neale Hurston, Gayl Jones, Alice Walker and Joy Kogawa in the Rodopi series Perspectives on Modern Literature, edited by Michael Meyer; and journal articles on African American women writers such as Toni Morrison. She is also the editor of bilingual (English/ Spanish) editions on the works of Jacob A. Riis, Como vive la otra mitad, Langston Hughes, Oscuridad en Espana, and Zora Neale Hurston, Mi gente Mi gente , and the co-editor of The Impact of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms(1982-2002): European Perspectives. She has been the recepient of numerous grants and scholarships, among which are the Fulbright research grant, and several scholarships granted by the Canadian Government in the framework of the Foreign Affairs Faculty Enrichment Program.

Columbia College
In 1854, founders of the South Carolina Methodist Conference established an all-female school in Columbia, South Carolina. Known originally as Columbia Female College, todays Columbia College has suffered and survived hardships, faced challenges, and flourished during its almost 150-year history as an institution of higher learning. The college has succeeded in its mission to provide quality liberal arts education for women and has become one of the leading establishments of its kind in the South. Included within these pages are vintage images of the school throughout the past century and a half. The ever-changing physical attributes of the collegeclassrooms, administration buildings, ornate gates, and dormitoriesas well as the students and faculty who helped shape the college into what it is today are commemorated here in both word and image. Gender, Taste, and Material Culture in Britain and North America, 1700-1830
Between 1700 and 1830, men and women in the English-speaking territories framing the Atlantic gained unprecedented access to material things. The British Atlantic was an empire of goods, held together not just by political authority and a common language, but by a shared material culture nourished by constant flows of commodities. Diets expanded to include exotic luxuries such as tea and sugar, the fruits of mercantile and colonial expansion. Homes were furnished with novel goods, like clocks and earthenware teapots, the products of British industrial ingenuity. This groundbreaking book compares these developments in Britain and North America, bringing together a multi-disciplinary group of scholars to consider basic questions about women, men, and objects in these regions. In asking who did the shopping, how things were used, and why they became the subject of political dispute, the essays show the profound significance of everyday objects in the eighteenth-century Atlantic world.

The 'Arry Ballads
The romantic notion of the Cockney, the shrewd and slangy common man coming from nowhere and surviving by his wits, is best exemplified by E.J. Milliken's character 'Arry and the verse letters or ballads he writes. The letters and stories, as well as the character of 'Arry, were Milliken's vehicles for social criticism, namely the intolerance shown by the aristocracy. Those letters, colorful additions to Victorian history and humor, tell the story of 'Arry, a commoner who is enamored of the social hierarchy, and who is keenly aware how close the top and bottom rungs are. Central to the themes is the Cockney whose pride is his dialect. Confidence in the face of the class system and withering social criticism make Milliken's 'Arry ballads memorable. This work analyzes the Cockney ballads and contains extensive annotations. Each chapter is dedicated to a facet of the everyday life of the common man in Victorian England, including entertainment, travel, and politics. Each is prefaced with a short analytical history of the period which also places the letters in context.
