Dust in the Blood

2023 College Theology Society Best Book Award 2023 Catholic Media Association Third Place Award, Theology – Morality, Ethics, Christology, Mariology, and Redemption 2023 Association of Catholic Publishers Second Place Award, Theology Dust in the Blood considers the harrowing realities of life with depression from a Christian theological perspective. In conversation with popular Christian theologies of depression that justify why this suffering exists and prescribe how people ought to relate to it, Jessica Coblentz offers another Christian approach to this condition: she reflects on depression as a wilderness experience. Weaving first-person narratives of depression, contemporary theologies of suffering, and ancient biblical tales of the wilderness, especially the story of Hagar, Coblentz argues for and contributes to an expansion of Christian ideas about what depression is, how God relates to it, and how Christians should understand and respond to depression in turn.

The Other Journal: Environment

The Other Journal is a space for Christian interdisciplinary reflection at the intersection of theology and culture. TOJ tackles the cultural crises of our time with verve and slant, advancing a progressive, provocative, and charitable response in sync with the peacefully contrarian Christ. In this issue, we address the theme of environment by visiting the "barren moonscapes" of Appalachia, the tobacco fields of Kentucky, an air-conditioned office in the Bronx, and urban Midwestern streets that are "blighted with trash." We read the foreign language of animal footprints in the sandy soil at the base of Mount Hood. And in all this, we seek to envision a kingdom of God that encompasses each fr...

But even in its initial context, in a document intended to be a manifesto of hope and freedom, the matter of who exactly was to be included in this “we” was unclear and contested. First-person pronouns (i.e., I and we) roll off the tongue–or onto parchment paper–with ease, but thei...

The ancient Olympic games were held every four years at the temple of Zeus. They were a major cultural and religious event that doubled as a contest between rivaling nation-states. At a time when ecological issues are prominent in religious and social discourse, this perfectly timed volume expresses a broad range of insights and opinions on ecology and the relationship between Christianity and the natural world. Topics are not limited to traditional environmental issues, but instead feature a variety of academic disciplines and experiences to dwell on "wildernesses" that are sometimes dangerous, sometimes sanctuaries, and often the source of graced encounter.
