While female authors and women in the book trades have long been studied, gender itself has yet to be explored as a methodology rather than a subject in book history. Early Modern Catholicism and the Printed Book
This collection of essays engages with a variety of aspects of early modern book culture in the 16th-17th centuries, considered in the Catholic context. The contributions reflect on the engagement of institutions and authorities in the process of book production, bringing to the fore the role of networks in this process; show the book as a tool of resistance to the Protestant Reformation; give insight into the content and design of book collections; showcase textual production in the context of cultural appropriation and shed light on the role of the image in the propagation of Catholicism. Together the sixteen contributions demonstrate the diversity of the Catholic book in its forms and functions, in various social and national contexts.

Political Engagement and Popular Print in Spanish Naples (1503–1707)
What was published in Naples during the Spanish Vicerealm? How did books, pamphlets, broadsheets and newspapers contribute to the political awareness of the Neapolitan people? To what extent did the authorities engage with this politically-charged literary world? This book aims to answer these questions by discussing an untapped body of sources, in manuscript and printed form. What emerges is a vivid picture of a vibrant printing industry and a rich cultural landscape. Three moments of crisis of the seventeenth century – the eruption of Vesuvius, Masaniello’s revolt and a major plague epidemic – are used as a test of the capability of the Spanish authorities in regards to political and propagandistic communication.

¿Desde cuándo es posible hablar de mujeres en el mundo del libro? ¿Cómo la historia del libro latinoamericano ha narrado —o no— los aportes que ellas han hecho en el ámbito editorial? Durante siglos, las impresoras, editoras, tipógrafas, encuadernadoras y libreras han sido invisibilizadas o relegadas en los estudios sobre la edición. Esta obra, que reúne los trabajos de veintiocho investigadoras de distintas disciplinas, aborda casos, panoramas, problemas, metodologías y fuentes documentales, con el fin de valorar los diversos aspectos del papel que han tenido las mujeres en el mundo del libro en Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, España, Guatemala, México, Perú, República Dominicana y Uruguay, entre los siglos XVII y XXI. En el marco de este campo, aún reciente y poco explorado, Las mujeres y los estudios del libro y la edición en Iberoamérica establece una línea de investigación con la que se espera incentivar futuras historias del libro y la edición de Latinoamérica, en las que, de forma articulada y sistemática, las voces de las mujeres sean incluidas, visibilizadas e iluminadas.

Marrying Jesus in Medieval and Early Modern Northern Europe
Analyzing understudied vernacular sources from the late medieval period - including sermons, early printed books, spiritual diaries, letters, songs, and hagiographies - Rabia Gregory shows how marrying Jesus was central to late medieval lay piety, and how the 'chaste' bride of Christ developed out of sixteenth-century religious disputes. She explains how this metaphor, initially devised for a religious elite, became integral to the laity's pursuit of salvation.
