14-year-old born blind Luciana and 28-year-old Russian emigrant Max; two romantic, intelligent and disadvantaged people in Australia, who struggle to find their place in society, but find themselves in rather awkward situations instead. They enjoy communicating with each other by email, but fail to meet in person, although the vicissitudes of fate confront them again and again... The book consists of two parts; Part One is narrated by Luciana, while Part Two contains Max's notes. The humour of the characters is sad and ironic, sometimes rising to outright sarcasm. Their comments are honest, though not void of certain controversy, bias and exaggeration. Complementing each other, they allow to observe the described events from different viewpoints and obtain impartial judgment about the heroes and their actions. The novel contains nude scenes and references to adult themes, however its scope is far wider than that.

Shackled

A rare look at the brute-force mechanics of deportation in the United States. In December 2017, U.S. immigration authorities shackled and abused 92 African refugees for two days while attempting to deport them by plane to Somalia. When national media broke the story, government officials lied about what happened. Shackled tells the story of this harrowing failed deportation, the resulting class action litigation, and two men's search for safety in the United States over the course of three long years. Through Abdulahi's and Sa'id's firsthand accounts, immigration lawyer Rebecca A. Sharpless brings to life the harsh consequences of the U.S. deportation system and how racism and anti-Blackness...

The First Generation Student Experience

Co-published with More first-generation students are attending college than ever before, and policy makers agree that increasing their participation in higher education is a matter of priority. Despite this, there is no agreed definition about the term, few institutions can quantify how many first-generation students are enrolled, or mistakenly conflate them with low-income students, and many important dimensions to the first-generation student experience remain poorly documented. Few institutions have in place a clear, well-articulated practice for assisting first-generation students to succeed. Given that first-generation students comprise over 40% of incoming freshmen, increasing their re...

Arrested Histories

In the 1950s, thousands of ordinary Tibetans rose up to defend their country and religion against Chinese troops. Their citizen army fought through 1974 with covert support from the Tibetan exile government and the governments of India, Nepal, and the United States. Decades later, the story of this resistance is only beginning to be told and has not yet entered the annals of Tibetan national history. In Arrested Histories, the anthropologist and historian Carole McGranahan shows how and why histories of this resistance army are “arrested” and explains the ensuing repercussions for the Tibetan refugee community. Drawing on rich ethnographic and historical research, McGranahan tells the st...

This book discusses the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of infections of the orbit and periorbital region and is written by experts in the fields of ophthalmology, oculoplastic surgery, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, and radiology. Infections of the orbit can be challenging to diagnose and manage. With the changing microbiology that has occurred over the years, as well as the introduction of new antibiotics, minimally invasive surgical approaches to the sinuses and orbits, and improved imaging techniques, it is often difficult for practitioners to stay current with the latest testing, medical treatments, and surgical approaches. Furthermore, as more ophthalmologists are joining hospital-...
