The Vortex

Environmental challenges are defining the twenty-first century. To fully understand ongoing debates about our current crises—climate change, loss of biological diversity, pollution, extinction, resource woes—means revisiting their origins, in all their complexity. With this ambitious, highly original contribution to the environmental history of global modernity, Frank Uekötter considers the many ways humans have had an impact on their physical environment throughout history. Ours is not a one-way trajectory to sudden collapse, he argues, but rather death by a thousand cuts. The many paths we’ve forged to arrive in our current predicament, from agriculture to industry to infrastructure...

Strategic Plan for Conducting Large Geographic Scale, Ship-Based Surveys to Support the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection and Endangered Species Acts

The motivation for this strategic plan is to provide a national, unified approach for meeting science needs in partial support of the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) and the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The specific objective is to provide a framework for discussion of ship time with respect to, chiefly, cetacean science needs. The plan presented here is meant to aid in strategic planning for these science requirements in the context of other National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) priorities and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) Healthy Ocean Goal. In particular, it is hoped that a proactive and comprehensive strategic plan based on a predictable schedule and geographic area rotation will facilitate the continuation, and in some cases, the initial implementation of, research that will provide the majority of data required to meet NMFS’ cetacean-related mandates. The eighth book in the dramatic and intriguing story about the colonisation of Australia: a country built on blood, passion, and dreams. The new governor leads the colony with great efficiency, yet, life is still hard and burdensome. Once again, an attempt must be made to conquer the Blue Mountains — because beyond the large mountains, it is said that there are fertile plains and plentiful pastures. This had been Jenny's life-long dream, and now, her son Justin was on his way there. Was the dream finally about to come true? Rebels and outcasts, they fled halfway across the earth to settle the harsh Australian wastelands. Decades later — ennobled by love and strengthened by tragedy — they had transformed a wilderness into a fertile land. And themselves into The Australians.
