Psychoanalysis and Aesthetics

The ‘interpretation’ Freud has supplied for dreams Baudouin attempts – and archives – for the imagery of the artistic creator. The work is in part based upon private documents supplied to the author by Madame Verhaeren, an autograph letter, and a previously unpublished poem.

D.H. Lawrence and Italian Futurism
The significance of D. H. Lawrence's reading of two Italian Futurist volumes in the summer of 1914 is widely acknowledged, but the nature of its significance has not been more closely examined, nor traced through his major fictional and discursive writings of the Great War and its aftermath. D. H. Lawrence and Italian Futurism addresses the oversight, firstly by examining the context to Lawrence's now famous June 1914 letters concerning Futurism; secondly, by placing Futurism - and Lawrence's interest in Futurism - in the light of the movement's intellectual indebtedness to nineteenth-century Naturalism; and, thirdly, by providing new readings of The Rainbow, Women in Love and Studies in Classic American Literature which draw on these contextual materials. The book's form will make it attractive to scholars and students of European modernism as well as to those interested in the works of D. H. Lawrence.
The Pataphysician's Library
The Pataphysician’s Library is a study of aspects of 1890s French literature, with specific reference to the traditions of Symbolism and Decadence. Its main focus is Alfred Jarry, who has proved, perhaps surprisingly, to be one of the more durable fin-de-siècle authors. The originality of this study lies in its use of the enigmatic list of books termed the livres pairs, which appears in Jarry’s 1898 novel Gestes et Opinions du docteur Faustroll, pataphysicien, his best-known prose work. The greatest interest of the livres pairs lies in a group of works by Jarry’s friends and contemporaries, primarily Leon Bloy, Georges Darien, Gustave Kahn, Catulle Mendes, Josephin Madan, Rachilde, and Henri de Regnier. Several of these authors feature as the lords of islands visited by the pataphysician Dr Faustroll in his curious voyage around Paris. In conjunction with Jarry’s own works, the contemporary livres pairs serve to illustrate the vibrant and experimental atmosphere in which these authors worked.
