This open access book is compilation of selected papers from 2nd International Conference on Innovative Solutions in Hydropower Engineering and Civil Engineering (HECE 2022). Towards Precise Control of the Mechanical and Chemical Milieu of Cells at Length and Time Scales Relevant for Emergent Subcellular Structure and Function
A major stumbling block to understanding the mechanoadaptation of cells is the lack of computational and experimental nano-/biomechanics tools to predict and test emergent mechanical properties of cells and their constituents. In this study we demonstrate and quantify, for the first time to our knowledge, three dimensional flow fields, through and around porous cell seeding substrates. Ultimately we aim to predict and observe in situ the local mechanical milieu around stem cells seeded on such substrates. We found that CFD predicts flow regimes within 17% of experimental measures, showing CFD as an important tool for flow field prediction. Apart from quantitative comparison, the precise measurement of permeability also shows CFD as an invaluable tool to interpret the basic experimental conditions. These studies have important implications for unraveling the mechanisms underlying multiscale development, growth and adaptation of organisms as well as de novo engineering of tissues.

Information technology (IT) is now intrinsic to many aspects of our lives, and this is no less so for the field of geo-engineering, where it is widely used.
