"Veljeni, Sudenkaltainen" kertoo nuoren valkoisen miehen elämästä ja selviytymistaistelusta shoshoni-heimon parissa Pohjois-Amerikan Wyomingissa, Tuuli-joen (Wind River) reservaatissa 1800-luvun loppupuolella. Tarina alkaa kun sattumalta paikalle osunut shoshoni-mies päättää ottaa orvoksi jääneen pojan hoteisiinsa. Hän saa huomata, että raivoisasti vastustelevan pojan lisäksi hänen aikeensa ei miellytä myöskään shoshoni-heimon jäseniä. Mies ei anna tämän lannistaa vaan alkaa kasvattaa pojasta "oikeaa" shoshonia. Aikojen kuluessa miehen ja pojan välinen yhteisymmärrys kuitenkin löytyy ja muuttuu jopa ystävyydeksi.
