The Modern Law of Evidence

The Modern Law of Evidence is a lucid treatment of the contemporary law of evidence and is recognised as an unusually clear and comprehensive account of a complex subject. This fifth edition again examines the theory of the law of evidence as well as its practical application, placing the emphasis, wherever possible, on recent discussion and modern aspects of the subject.

Null Object

  • Categories: Art

This book charts a project by London Fieldworks (Bruce Gilchrist and Jo Joelson) with the participation of internationally celebrated artist Gustav Metzger to create a sculptural work by linking a computer-brain interface with industrial manufacturing technology. Using bespoke software, London Fieldworks produced 3D shape information from EEG readings of Metzger’s brainwaves as he attempted to think about nothing. This data was translated into instructions for a manufacturing robot, which carved out the shapes from the interior of a block of stone to create a void space. An introduction by the artists, a text by Gustav Metzger and four contextualising essays by writers across the fields of literature, art, science and technology explore the diverse historical and conceptual grounding for and broader implications of Null Object’s production process. Exhibition: WORK Gallery, London, UK (30.11.2012-9.2.2013).

The Last Time I Saw You

She's waiting to become a mother--but first she has to find her own. Weeks away from the birth of her first child, Georgie should be enjoying the peace of her new life in the country, but boredom has settled in and nerves are running high. A viral news story about the rescue of a missing child warms her heart until she sees the photo: the woman who found the child is her own mother, Nancy, who disappeared twenty years ago. How could Nancy have abandoned her own children? Georgie needs to know before becoming a mother herself, even if it means calling on her estranged brother Dan for support. As the siblings set off on a road trip towards the Scottish island where Nancy was last seen, they don't yet know that her side of the story has just as much heartache as their own. Caught between her new life and old secrets, Georgie must make peace with the past. Can she and Dan unite to uncover the truth? And can piecing together Nancy's story fix their broken family--or are some wounds too deep to heal?
