The Handbook presents the state of art in syntactic analysis, also dealing with the methodology employed, and the rules of argumentation required to achieve such analyses for a wide range of phenomena.
Houses of Life
Jewish cemeteries are called Houses of Life for good reason. This book shows how burial grounds across Europe reflect the ways that specific Jewish communities have lived and continue to live. Thirty cemeteries are profiled, starting with the Roman era, running through Islamic Spain and medieval Italy to baroque and 19th-century Germany, and ending in present-day Britain and France. Each cemetery is illustrated with historical and current plans, maps, paintings, drawings, and photographs of both the cemeteries and the communities they have served.

Experimental Studies in Word and Sentence Prosody
This volume presents 14 experimental studies of lexical tone and intonation in a wide variety of languages. Six papers deal with the discriminability or the function of intonation contours and lexical tones in specific languages, as established on the basis of listener responses, as well as with brain activation patterns resulting from the perception of tonal and intonational stimuli. The remaining eight papers report on detailed phonetic findings on a variety of tonal phenomena in a number of languages, including declination in tone languages, final lowering, consonant-tone interactions and pitch target alignment.
Topic, Focus, and Configurationality
Some fundamental questions regarding sentence structure in linguistics concern whether all languages, at some level of abstraction, have the same structure, and what are the basic categories with which to describe sentence structure. The contributors of this volume are specialized in two quite different languages: Hungarian and German. Of the German papers three are mainly about focus (Abraham, Jacobs, and Stechow-Uhman), whereas the remaining ones (Haider and Scherpenisse) are mainly about V-second. The Hungarian papers are all about focus, of which those of Kálman, Kiefer, Marácz, and De Mey-Marácz are about focussing in the stricter sense. Hunyadi, Kenesei and É. Kiss focus on the pre-verbal area in general and the interpretation of operators in Hungarian in particular. The remaining papers (Horvath, Komlósy, and Szabolczi) are on the position of the PRE-V, the position immediately after the finite verb.
Discourse Particles
Particles have for the longest time been ignored by linguistic research. School-type grammars ignored them since they did not fit into pre-conceived notions of categories, and since they did not seem to enter into grammatical relations commonly discussed in the genre. Only in the last century did some publications discuss particles – and even then only from the perspective of their discourse and pragmatic functions, i.e. their dependance on certain previous contexts, and concluded that the function of particles for the grammar of sentences and their interpretation remains obscure. The current volume presents 11 new articles that take a fresh look at particles: As it turns out, particles inform many aspects of syntax and semantics, too – both diachronically and synchronically: Particles are shown to have fascinating syntactic properties with respect to projection, locality, movement and scope. Their interpretative contributions can be studied with the rigorous methods of formal semantics. Cross-linguistic and diachronic investigations shed new light on the genesis and development of these intriguing – and under-estimated – kinds of lexical elements.
Explorations in Integrational Linguistics
Integrational Linguistics (IL), developed by the German linguist Hans-Heinrich Lieb and others, is an approach to linguistics that integrates linguistic descriptions, construed as 'declarative' theories, with a detailed theory of language that covers all classical areas of linguistics, from phonology to sentence semantics, and takes linguistic variation, both synchronic and diachronic, fully into account. The aim of this book is to demonstrate how some controversial issues in language description are resolved in Integrational Linguistics. The four essays united here cover nearly all levels of language systems: phonetics and phonology (The Case for Two-Level Phonology by Hans-Heinrich Lieb, on German obstruent tensing and French nasal alternation), morphology (Form and Function of Verbal Ablaut in Contemporary Standard German by Bernd Wiese), morphology and syntax (Inflectional Units and Their Effects by Sebastian Drude, on the person system in Guaraní), and syntax and sentence semantics (Topic Integration by Andreas Nolda, on 'split topicalization' in German).
Untersuchungen zur verbalen Valenz im biblischen Hebräisch
Im biblischen Hebräisch bestimmt wie in anderen Sprachen die Valenz eines Verbs die Zahl und die Form der Ergänzungen. Die Form verbaler Ergänzungen kann jedoch variieren. Wichtige Aspekte dieser Variation werden im vorliegenden Band umfassend beschrieben und erklärt, wobei syntaktische, semantische und sprachgeschichtliche Gesichtspunkte berücksichtigt werden. Im einzelnen werden die Markierung direkter Objekte und der Wechsel zwischen direkten Objekten und Präpositionalobjekten beziehungsweise zwischen verschiedenen Präpositionen bei Präpositionalobjekten untersucht. Der Gebrauch der Präposition Lamed bei Infinitiven und unterschiedliche Konstruktionen zum Ausdruck der Wahrnehmung von Sachverhalten werden ebenfalls behandelt. Das Buch liefert dadurch einen Beitrag zum Verständnis der althebräischen Syntax, der Semantik bestimmter syntaktischer Konstruktionen und der geschichtlichen Entwicklung des biblischen Hebräisch. Es richtet sich an Alttestamentler, Hebraisten und andere sprachwissenschaftlich Interessierte.
Sounds and Systems
The integration of traditional and modern linguistics as well as diachrony and synchrony is the hallmark of an influential trend in contemporary research on language. It is documented in the present collection of 21 new papers on the history and structure of the sounds and other (sub-) systems of human languages, sharing the common reference point of Theo Vennemann, a leading figure in the above-mentioned trend, whom the authors want to honor with this Festschrift.
