This collection of essays primarily honours Bernfried Nugel the teacher and scholar, but it also pays homage to Bernfried Nugel the indefatigable worker in the cause of Aldous Huxley studies. It is due to this latter manifestation that many of the contributors to this volume know each other personally, having met at one or more of the international conferences that Professor Nugel organized and either hosted or co-hosted. At Munster, his home university, he has also been instrumental in establishing and heading a center for admirers of Huxley's work, along with a fine library of Huxley materials, including manuscripts and numerous first editions. Information Structure and Word Order in the Advanced Learner Variety
Highly proficient speakers of a second language who began acquisition as adults are rarely the object of second language acquisition research. In the study described in this book, the speech of 36 advanced learners of German, 20 of whom were considered to have "near-native" proficiency was recorded, transcribed and analyzed according to the "Quaestio Model". The focus of the study was the information structure of the learners' spoken texts and its implications for word order. The study revealed differences in the information structure of texts of learners and native German speakers even for those learners whose performance was nearly indistinguishable from L1 German speakers. The author discusses possible reasons for these differences, suggests implications for second language acquisition theory and draws up lesson plans for using the insights brought forth by the study for the second language and translation classrooms.
Semantics and Lexicography
This volume is a compilation of nine articles, translated from German. They deal with those lexicographic texts or text excerpts which have been formulated in order to convey the meaning of a lexical unit to a potential dictionary user who is not familiar with that meaning. The articles not only critically analyze lexicographic practice, in particular the so-called lexicographic definitions and the items giving the synonyms in correlation with the examples, in the light of different semantic approaches. They also present ways towards a common understanding in the context of lexicographically imparting knowledge of meaning, i.e. on the basis of an actional-semantics approach which takes into account results obtained from analyses of everyday dialogs about word meanings. Moreover, they discuss how meaning-conveying texts can serve their purposes in dictionary look-up situations, and they lay out all those aspects which are particularly to be taken into consideration in the formulation of lexicographic texts aimed at conveying meaning, in dictionaries belonging to different types.
The Pragmatics of Irish English
Irish English, while having been the focus of investigations on a variety of linguistic levels, reveals a dearth of research on the pragmatic level. In the present volume, this imbalance is addressed by providing much-needed empirical data on language use in Ireland in the private, official and public spheres and also by examining the use of Irish English as a reflection of socio-cultural norms of interaction. Explorations in Linguistic Relativity
About a century after the year Benjamin Lee Whorf (18971941) was born, his theory complex is still the object of keen interest to linguists. Rencently, scholars have argued that it was not his theory complex itself, but an over-simplified, reduced section taken out of context that has become known as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis that has met with so much resistance among linguists over the last few decades. Not only did Whorf present his views much more subtly than most people would believe, but he also dealt with a great number of other issues in his work. Taking Whorf's own notion of linguistic relativity as a starting point, this volume explores the relation between language, mind and experience through its historical development, Whorf's own writing, its misinterpretations, various theoretical and methodological issues and a closer look at a few specific issues in his work.
Writings of Early Scholars in the Ancient Near East, Egypt, Rome, and Greece

Translation and Language Teaching
Drawing upon convergences between translation studies and foreign and second language (L2) didactics that have emerged as a result of recent research, this volume continues the dialogue between the two disciplines by allowing for epistemological two-way traffic, marrying established, yet so far unrelated or under-researched, conceptual approaches, and disseminating innovative scientific evidence from different continents. This volume deals with the theory and practice of incorporating authentic experiential work into curricula for the education of professional translators and interpreters. The contributions deal with a wide variety of topics in this domain, extending from the foundations of experiential learning in pedagogical epistemology to discussions of exemplary experiments with the use of authentic project work at leading translator and interpreter education institutions in Germany, Spain and Switzerland.
