Emscherkunstweg

  • Categories: Art

The Emscherkunstweg (Emscher Art Trail) currently comprises 23 works of public art on the banks of the Emscher River in the heart of the Ruhr region in western Germany. Once the most polluted river in Europe, the Emscher has been dramatically transformed from a drainage system into a natural river landscape. Between 2010 and 2016, three Emscher art exhibitions accompanied this ecological tour de force. Since 2019, the permanent works of art resulting from these exhibitions have formed the starting point for the expansion into the Emscher Art Trail. This volume is the first to offer an overview of all the works, in particular the new works by Julius von Bismarck/Marta Dyachenko, David Jablonowski, Markus Jeschaunig, Sofía Táboas and Nicole Wermers. It also addresses questions surrounding the preservation and potential of art in public space and its relationship to the region’s industrial culture. The book is an ideal travel companion and reference work for discovering art on over 100 kilometers of cycle paths.

Performance Assessment of Urban Infrastructure Services

Performance assessment has been one of the hottest topics in the water industry in the past decade. In that period, the International Water Association has played a key role, and the performance indicators systems developed for drinking water and wastewater utilities have become a reference worldwide. This book represents a collection of the papers presented to the Pi08 Conference, in Valencia, Spain (March 2008). The conference represents the final stage in the COST C18 Action, funded by the EU and brings together some of the most relevant professionals in the water industry. The book covers the latest trends in performance assessment, as well as relevant case studies from practical applications in utilities around the globe. Themes: Performance Indicators Metric Benchmarking Process Benchmarking Asset Management Regulation Case Studies

The Age of Ecology

This book is the first major study of the history of environmentalism, from its origins in romanticism and the nature cults of the late 18th century to the global environmental movements of today. Radkau shows that this is not a single story of the steady ascent of environmentalism but rather a multiplicity of stories, each with its own dramatic tension: between single-issue movements and the challenges posed by the interconnection of environmental issues, between charismatic leaders and bureaucratic organizations, and between grassroot movements and global players. While the history can be traced back several centuries, environmentalism has flourished since the ‘environmental revolutionâ€...

Heritage is not what we see in front of us, it is what we make of it in our heads. Heritage sites have been connected to a range of identarian projects, both spatial and non-spatial. One of the most common links with heritage has been national identity. This book stresses that heritage has developed powerful links to regional and local identities. Contributors deal explicitly with regions of heavy industry in different parts of the world, exploring non-spatial forms of identity: including class, religious, ethnic, racial, gender and cultural identities. In many heritage sites, non-spatial forms of identity are interlinked with spatial ones. Civil society action has been important in represen...

The fall of the West German government in 1982 ended the 13-year rule of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) as the senior coalition partner under Chancellors Willy Brandt and Helmut Schmidt. In perpetual opposition from 1949 to 1966, the Social Democrats finally entered the government as the junior coalition party in 1966; three years later they assumed primary responsibility for guiding the nation. The central theme of this detailed examination of the SPD during its years of governance is that social and economic forces in the nation had a major effect, often unsettling, on the party at a time when it had achieved the pinnacle of political power. Significant changes in the party's organizati...
