Slave Trading in the Old South

Overwhelming evidence against the historical view of slavery as a benevolent "peculiar institution" Posting what he called "a most deadly array of facts," Frederic Bancroft exploded deeply entrenched myths about antebellum slavery when Slave Trading in the Old South was first published in 1931. As fresh and informative today as it was then, the classic study returns to print, giving a new generation of historians, students, and history enthusiasts access to Bancroft's pioneering examination of the domestic slave trade. Drawing largely on research that could not be duplicated today—correspondence with individuals involved in the slave trade and interviews with former slaves—Bancroft expos...

Take Sides with the Truth

During the Civil War, John Singleton Mosby led the Forty-third Battalion, Virginia Cavalry, better known as Mosby’s Rangers, in bold and daring operations behind Union lines. Throughout the course of the war, more than 2000 men were members of Mosby’s command, some for only a short time. Mosby had few confidants (he was described by one acquaintance as “a disturbing companion”) but became close friends with one of his finest officers, Samuel Forrer Chapman. Chapman served with Mosby for more than two years, and their friendship continued in the decades after the war. Take Sides with the Truth is a collection of more than eighty letters, published for the first time in their entirety,...

Weaponizing Maps

Maps play an indispensable role in indigenous peoples? efforts to secure land rights in the Americas and beyond. Yet indigenous peoples did not invent participatory mapping techniques on their own; they appropriated them from techniques developed for colonial rule and counterinsurgency campaigns, and refined by anthropologists and geographers. Through a series of historical and contemporary examples from Nicaragua, Canada, and Mexico, this book explores the tension between military applications of participatory mapping and its use for political mobilization and advocacy. The authors analyze the emergence of indigenous territories as spaces defined by a collective way of life--and as a particular kind of battleground.

Garner

Garner, North Carolina, located just south of Raleigh, was officially reinstated as a town in 1905; however, settlers lived here as early as the 1750s. Like many Southern towns, Garner's economy was originally supported by farming, especially cotton and, later, tobacco. In the mid-19th century the railroad and Holloman's Road, an old country road connecting Garner with Raleigh, brought much change to the community. Residents were able to travel between the state capital and their hometown, bringing back new ideas, merchandise, and settlers. This continues today; however, Garner has maintained the small-town charm of its past while adapting to the changing culture surrounding it.
