The early letters in the collection are primarily between Samuel H. Remele and his brother Stephen W. Remele. These letters begin in 1801, with one letter possibly being older, but undated. Some of the letters are emotionally charged, concerning hard times and death. The names of the senders of some of these early letters to Samuel H. are unidentified. Persons represented include John Remele, William R. Remele, Charles Remele, Stephen Remele, Julia Perkins Remele, Wesley Perkins, and William Arthur Remele.
