Biodiversity Hotspots
Current loss of biodiversity places a premium on the task of recognising and formulating proposals on potential areas for biological conservation based on scientific criteria; among these tasks, identification of hotspots has a relevant role on conservation of biodiversity. In this book, the authors discuss the application of different biogeographic methods to identify plant biodiversity hotspots. The areas recognised as such have a relevant role in plant biodiversity and are important in conservation due to their climatic conditions, the historical factors that have been involved in their evolution, and the restricted distribution of some plant taxa that inhabit them. Furthermore, the consequences of deforestation on biodiversity are substantial and widely recognised. This book predicts future land-use change, generates ecological niches of large mammals and assesses wildlife concentrations and their hotspots in different areas of the world. The evolution of the forest fragmentation in the Brazilian Atlantic forest, the present situation of its remnants, and the main strategies, conflicts and potentials for conservation are evaluated as well.
Johannes Wiedewelt
In the latter half of the 18th century, Johannes Wiedewelt (1731-1802) played a pivotal role in introducing an early form of Neoclassicism into Danish sculpture by creating a large number of monuments for many different purposes. In the 1750s, he studied in Paris and Rome, where he became part of an international network of pioneering artists and scholars, including J.J. Winckelmann. In Denmark, Wiedewelt endeavored to translate the ancient idiom in statuary and monuments into an 'eternal' national monument style. This volume reassesses Wiedewelt's role in the service of art, art theory, academic education, design, etc. Special emphasis is placed on his studies of Classical Antiquity and Danish prehistoric and medieval monuments, which makes him particularly interesting for the history of archaeology. This is the first book-length study of Johannes Wiedewelt in English.
From Christian Hebraism to Jewish Studies: Johannes Buxtorf (1564-1629) and Hebrew Learning in the Seventeenth Century
This book examines how Johannes Buxtorf's works helped to transform seventeenth-century Hebrew studies from the hobby of a few experts into a recognized academic discipline. The first two chapters examine Buxtorf's career as a professor of Hebrew and as an editor and censor of Jewish books in Basel. Successive chapters analyze his anti-Jewish polemical books, grammars and lexicons, and manuals for Hebrew composition and literature, including the first bibliography devoted to Jewish books. The final chapters treat his work in biblical studies, examining his contribution to Targum and Massorah studies, and his position on the age and doctrinal authority of the Hebrew vowel points. The chapters on anti-Jewish polemics and the vowel points will interest Jewish historians and Church historians.
Global Marine Science and Carlsberg - The Golden Connections of Johannes Schmidt (1877-1933)
By accident, the world-famous brewery Carlsberg became a central force in global marine science during the first three decades of the 20th century. Within a core group of scientists and managers, Johannes Schmidt (1877-1933) was the key figure combining the efforts of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), the Danish state and several private companies. Launching 26 oceangoing expeditions Schmidt made landmark discoveries such as the breeding ground for the Atlantic eel in the Sargasso Sea. The scientific frontier was pushed literally kilometres into the deep sea and across the World’s oceans. While the formal North Atlantic Empire of the small state of Denmark was in decline, an informal empire of science was erected instead. Shortlisted for the Society for Nautical Research Anderson Medal for published works on Maritime History in 2016.
