"Three years ago, when Perspectives in Personality Theory appeared under the editorship of Henry P. David and Helmut von Bracken, with contributions by twenty-two psychologists from nine different countries, I described it as "a real landmark in international cooperation among psychologists." All of us connected with the International Union of Scientific Psychology were delighted with this tangible expression of increased communication among psychologists, who too often remain content to read the writings of their own countrymen in their own language. Our pleasure was increased with the publication of the volume in German as well, thus widening even more the circle of international contact; ...

Perspectives in Psychological Experimentation

One response to questions about the future of psychology is to attempt an answer to another question: What have we learned from psychology’s past? Originally published in 1984, reissued here with a new preface, this book presents a collection of original papers by authorities with international reputations in various fields of psychology at the time. Contributors were invited to appraise the past of their own research specialties, with an eye toward the future. The emphasis is upon the more scientific areas of psychological research. The catalyst for this book was an international conference honoring Gustav A. Lienert held in 1981. Psychologists from both Western and Eastern Europe, North and South America, and representing fields as different as psychophysics is from clinical psychology, or animal memory from human decision making, described their research and argued the prospects for the future of experimental psychology. Most of the arguments found their way into this book where readers could confront the different viewpoints at the time and those reading it today can see how accurate their predictions were for the future.

Health at Work

This book focuses on the major issues surrounding worksite health promotion programs. It identifies and discusses examples of the most intensively studied programs (such as Johnson and Johnson's "Live for Life," and AT&T's "TLC"), and considers the "state of science" for the four most frequently offered health-promotion program components: smoking cessation, weight control, exercise, and stress management. As is becoming increasingly evident, worksite health-promotion activities pose their own unique set of challenges -- challenges that are likely to have a significant impact on national health status and costs. Crucial areas addressed in this volume include program development and design, cost benefit/cost effectiveness, and legislative/policy issues.

Panic and Phobias 2

This volume reports in four sections the most recent developments of treatments in anxiety disorders. The current well-elaborated, though partly controversial, behavioral, cognitive, psychophysiological, and biological concepts for treatment of anxiety disorders are carefully evaluated (Part I). Part II discusses results of the short- and long-term effectiveness of the respective treatment methods, their side effects, and failures. Promising new basic-experimental and clinical studies from twenty research centers in Europe, Australia, and the United States shed new light on the relevant behavioral and biological variables and mechanisms involved in the development (Part III) as well as in the course and outcome of anxiety disorders (Part IV). Thus, for the clinician as well as for the researcher, this book provides the most up-to-date information about the current state of treatment-relevant research in panic and phobias.
