Academic theologians, when they write, normally decide for themselves what to discuss. Admittedly, these days, they may work under pressure, to ensure tenure, to advance their prospects, or to secure funding for a departmental project. Mostly, however, they work, sometimes for years, on the books which consolidate the vision of theology that has energised their teaching. Sometimes, of course, the contingencies of being invited to review a book, or take part in a conference, lead to what for medieval theologians were 'quodlibets'- responses to 'whatever', topics raised by members of the class during open-ended discussions, sometimes unexpected, even random, treated suggestively rather than fully worked out. This volume is a miscellany of just such papers, a wide ranging collection of papers from books and journals with a strong philosophical leaning.
Ignaz Seipel
Ignaz Seipel (1876-1932) was Chancellor and Foreign Minister of Austria's first, postwar republic and leader of its conservative party, the Christian Socialists. Born into the old order, a Catholic priest, a scholar and ascetic, Seipel was also a man whose worldly ambitions led him to the center of Austrian politics during the turbulent period of her adjustment from multinational empire to small power. Popes and Cardinals of the 20th Century
From 1900 through 2000, the Catholic Church has had nine popes. As the 21st century began, John Paul II was in his 22nd year as head of the church. During the century more than 600 cardinals have helped to lead the church. This biographical reference work covers all nine popes and all 641 cardinals. The first section presents the popes in chronological order and provides date and place of birth and death, education and training for the priesthood, positions held within the church, and roles in church leadership and various conclaves. In the second section the cardinals are listed alphabetically and much the same biographical information is provided for them. (An appendix gives all the cardinals appointed by John Paul II in 2001.)
The Book of Revelation
John's Book of Revelation - the Apocalypse - has been subjected to countless interpretations by theologians over the years, mostly based on theory and speculation. In contrast, Rudolf Steiner spoke from his own direct experience and knowledge of the spiritual truths contained in St John's mysterious pictures.Although he had previously presented his insights into the Book of Revelation a number of times, in 1924 Steiner ventured to give a completely new perspective - in response to a request by priests of The Christian Community - by relating the subject closely to the work of the modern priest. 'These priests felt the need to achieve a closer relationship with the Book of Revelation', he wrote later. 'I believed I would be able to contribute to such a closer relationship. The spiritual paths I follow had enabled me to trace the apocalyptist's footsteps. So I felt that with this course of lectures I would be able to achieve a depiction that would convey this priestly book in its true sense as a spiritual guide for the priest.'
