Lay Prophets in Lutheran Europe (c. 1550–1700)
Lay prophets in Lutheran Europe (c. 1550–1700) is the first transnational study of the phenomenon of angelic apparitions in all Lutheran cultures of early modern Europe. Jürgen Beyer provides evidence for more than 350 cases and analyses the material in various ways: tracing the medieval origins, studying the spread of news about prophets, looking at the performances legitimising their calling, noting their comments on local politics, following the theological debates about prophets, and interpreting the early modern notions of holiness within which prophets operated. A full chronology and bibliography of all cases concludes the volume. Beyer demonstrates that lay prophets were an accepted part of Lutheran culture and places them in their social, political and confessional contexts.

Consciousness, Theatre, Literature and the Arts 2011
The essays collected in this volume were initially presented at the Fourth International Conference on Consciousness, Theatre, Literature and the Arts, held at the University of Lincoln, May 28–30, 2011. The conference was organised on the basis of the success of its predecessors in 2005, 2007 and 2009, and on the basis of the success of the Rodopi book series Consciousness, Literature and the Arts, which has to date seen thirty volumes in print, with another twelve in press or in the process of being written. The 2011 conference and the book series highlight the continuing growth of interest within the interdisciplinary field of consciousness studies, and in the distinct disciplines of theatre studies, literary studies, film studies, fine arts and music in the relationship between the object of these disciplines and human consciousness. Fifty-five delegates from twenty-eight countries across the world attended the May 2011 conference in Lincoln; their range of disciplines and approaches is reflected well in this book.

Baltic Commerce and Urban Society, 1500-1700
The great merchant port of Danzig, now Gdansk, is at the centre of this set of studies by Professor Maria Bogucka. Through it passed the greatest part of the trade that linked the West with Poland and the Baltic; from it the commercial culture of the West spread out into the towns of Poland, and with it new currents in religion and urban life, and from there it began to permeate the whole of Polish society. The studies in this volume examine both the social and economic sides of this process, looking at articles of commerce and trends in urbanization, as well as patterns of poor relief and gender relations. The author's aim is to analyse specific aspects of what happened in Poland, while situating these in the broader context of the development of early modern European society.
