A commander of the Order of Military Merit and an Officer of the Order of Canada, Richard Rohmer's military career began in World War II, where he flew over the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, one of a tour of 135 missions for which he received the Distinguished Flying Cross. It was this service as a pilot that led to a unique meeting with Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. Sixty years later Rohmer was appointed the Chair of the Canadian government's D-Day Commemoration Advisory Committee.
