Titanic

“By far the most thorough and well-written investigative book on RMS Titanic’s short life and tragic sinking that this reviewer has read . . . fascinating.” —Choice Reviews The sinking of the Titanic on her maiden voyage in April 1912 was one of the defining moments of the twentieth century. Books and films about the disaster that befell the iconic liner are commonplace, and it seems almost inconceivable that anything fresh can emerge. But there is one angle that has not been covered, and Titanic examines the events of April 1912 from that completely new perspective. John Lang brings the standards of a twenty-first-century accident investigation to bear on the events of April 1912, u...

Nobody's Good Fortune

Nobody's good fortune by John Lang John Lang was for sixteen years an influential figure in British broadcasting. For much of that time he was Head of Religious Broadcasting at the BBC during a period of dramatic and far-reaching change. This engaging memoir follows his life through childhood and youth in the War years to service with the Army in Malaya, his time as Dean of Lichfield (where he founded the Arts Festival) and membership of the Broadcasting Complaints Commission, as well as those turbulent years at the BBC. Famous people constantly appear, from the Queen and Diana, Princess of Wales, to many great names in broadcasting.

John Lang

This book is in pursuit of Alice, whose name rhymes with gallus. That, however, is another memory, another book waiting to germinate. John Lang (1816-1864), inebriated on John Exshaw, 'a ruling spirit of those days', most of his adult life, was a dogged underdog from Sydney, who spared no effort to hurt the John Company (East India Company). He settled in India at the age of 26, and was a prolific writer, journalist and lawyer. His novels were too feminist for Victorian comfort, while his white male protagonists were often described with the phrase-'India he loved, England he despised.' As a journalist he was irreverent towards the army and legal systems; modern journalists could take a lesson or two from Mr Lang. As a lawyer, John Lang learnt Persian and Urdu fast so that he could argue cases in the lower courts. He fought a number of important cases for Indians against the John Company, and won some-the establishment found a way to send him to jail. The Rani of Jhansi was so impressed, she invited him to be her lawyer. There was a party going on at Lang's house when he died. He said that a party should not be stopped just on account of his ill health.

Urban Design the American Experience Jon Lang Urban Design: The American Experience places social and environmental concerns within the context of American history. It returns the focus of urban design to the creation of a better world. It evaluates the efforts of designers who apply knowledge about the environment and people to the creation of livable, enjoyable, and even inspiring built worlds. Urban Design

Urban Design: A Typology of Procedures and Products, 2nd Edition provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to urban design, defining the field and addressing the controversies and goals of urban design. Including over 50 updated international case studies, this new edition presents a three-dimensional model with which to categorize the processes and products involved: product type, paradigm type, and procedural type. The case studies not only illuminate the typology but provide information that designers can use as precedents in their own work. Uniquely, these case study projects are framed by the design paradigm employed, categorized by procedural type instead of instrumental or land use function. The categories used here are Total Urban Design, All-of-a-piece Urban Design, Plug-in Urban Design, and Piece-by-piece Urban Design. Written for both professionals and those encountering urban design in their day-to-day life, Urban Design is an essential introduction to the field and practice, considering the future direction of the field and what can be learned from the past.
