The Tease Spoons

The drama in The Tease Spoons proceeds on two levels. On one level, it portrays the comedic interaction---verbal banter, innuendo, wordplay---between two seemingly mismatched couples whose friendship is threatened by an impulsive act of betrayal by one of its principals. On the second level, it is a philosophical discourse, conveyed through a fifth dreamlike figure from a different plane of existence, whose imaginative soliloquy highlights the essential natures of our four principal characters. The interplay between two levels then shifts the dialog away from mundane, comedic human concerns and toward the wonders of the natural world and the mystery of memory and time. It also brings The Tease Spoons to an unexpected, and an unexpectedly satisfying, conclusion.

Before they became independent nations, Kenya and India were both part of the British Empire, and the State of Goa, now reunited with India, was ruled for centuries by Portugal. This book is a literary journey through their complex, inter-related colonial past. More broadly, it is a biography' of the fascinating region that borders the western Indian Ocean and an account of the extensive traffic and intercourse between the peoples of its diverse shores. Drawing on first-hand sources, the author creates a historical collage of the colonial era, highlighting the gross inequities of that exploitative, global, economic and political system. Given the growing inequality of present-day globalizati...

Differentiable Optimization and Equation Solving

An overview of the dramatic reorganization in reaction to N. Karmakar’s seminal 1984 paper on algorithmic linear programming in the area of algorithmic differentiable optimization and equation-solving, or, more simply, algorithmic differentiable programming. Aimed at readers familiar with advanced calculus and numerical analysis.

Concise Guide to Numerical Algorithmics

Numerical Algorithmic Science and Engineering (NAS&E), or more compactly, Numerical Algorithmics, is the theoretical and empirical study and the practical implementation and application of algorithms for solving finite-dimensional problems of a numeric nature. The variables of such problems are either discrete-valued, or continuous over the reals, or, and as is often the case, a combination of the two, and they may or may not have an underlying network/graph structure. This re-emerging discipline of numerical algorithmics within computer science is the counterpart of the now well-established discipline of numerical analysis within mathematics, where the latter’s emphasis is on infinite-dim...

DLP and Extensions

DLP denotes a dynamic-linear modeling and optimization approach to computational decision support for resource planning problems that arise, typically, within the natural resource sciences and the disciplines of operations research and operational engineering. The text examines the techniques of dynamic programming (DP) and linear programming (LP). DLP also connotes a broad modeling/algorithmic concept that has numerous areas of application. Two motivating examples provide a linking thread through the main chapters. The appendix provides a demonstration program, executable on a PC, for hands-on experience with the DLP approach.
