The majority of all border Scotts are probably descended from one or other of the three main branches into which, as will be seen, the family is divided ..." (Introduction). These three main branches are: (1) Robert Scott (d.ca.1389), third Laird of Rankilburn; (2) John Scott, brother of Robert; (3) Sir Michael Scott (fl.1165), brother of the direct ancestor in the sixth generation of Robert and John. Descendants and relatives lived along the order and elsewhere in Scotland. Many des- cendants and relatives lived in England, and some lived in Ireland
