Cobbett's Field

Explanation Cobbett's Field was first published for private circulation in 1997. Since then it has been through four revisions. With the present edition (for general sale) five poems have been omitted since they are now available in Rückblick II. However, there is some duplication in the case of four poems which also appear in War (2007). Moreover, a handful of poems with a war theme appear here that are not included in War. Ten poems have been added to the original content. There has also been some readjustment to the order of presentation. August 2007 Introduction to the First Edition Reading poetry simply reinforces for me what fickle creatures we are. I have had my way with the presentation as with the words themselves. It has all been carefully thought through (that much is to be hoped for at least). There is no saying, however, that I won't have a different mind of the matter tomorrow. I had wanted this selection to be representative, but then nothing can be that without exposing the entire corpus - an unthinkable act. August 1997

Foreword Many of the stories appearing in this collection were published privately in 1996 under the title Non Tractus. A further five volumes of short stories followed which were likewise distributed through private subscription. With the present volume (for general sale) some additional material has been added and so I have decided to call the book Garreg wen Revisited. Readers familiar with the Carneddau in North Wales may have identified, until quite recently, the ruin bearing the name Garreg wen, not far from the dam at Llyn Cowlyd. (I am reliably informed that the building has been demolished since it was supposed to present a safety hazard!) I lived on and off from 1965 to 1974 at Hafod y rhiw close by Llyn Eigiau in the adjacent valley. John Vetterlein Rousay Orkney October 2009

The knitting woman's story is told by a scholar who has, through chance, crossed her path and who cannot get her out of his mind. The knitting woman is in her mid to late twenties (possibly), without a name and who never speaks. (She may be dumb and a little hard of hearing.) Her antecedents appear in the novel but a little detective work is necessary in order to smoke them out. The novel progresses as a sort of journey, for the knitting woman is a lady of the road. The setting is initially London and moves via Shrewsbury to West Wales. The time is between 1960 and 1980. A picture of the narrator himself emerges as he consults with his mentor on the many issues thrown up by the Knitting Woma...

Explanation A selection of my poems entitled Rückblick was first published for private distribution in March 2001. At that time I had produced a number of collections of poems for private circulation. In 2004 it was suggested I might extend Rückblick to include work written since 2001. I had the idea of a selection to contain only those works written since Rückblick and which I was to call The Old Voices. The possibility of offering these poems to a wider readership caused me to reconsider the original plan. Accordingly, I have put together a selection from all the poems written up to May 2005. Since this book retains most of Rückblick intact, I have decided to name the present work Rüc...

Introduction The use of the word war today is ambiguous. The recent occupation of Iraq by members of a coalition led by the USA is frequently referred to as an act of war. It is hardly that when the world's most powerful nation militarily sweeps into a country which is unable to offer any effective or meaningful resistance. Some call such an act a turkey shoot. Matters military dominate our so-called civilization. Venture into the British countryside on any weekday and you are almost certain to encounter some form of military exercise. Intensive low-flying training has been going on there for several decades. The Ministry of Defence in cahoots with NATO ensures that vast resources are poured into the military. It is all very high tech stuff but most of it is about keeping a vested interest in motion. Military policy is shrouded in secrecy but it needs no high intelligence to work out that supersonic fighter jets have nothing to do with protecting us against terrorism. These poems allude to war in this broader understanding of the word. John Vetterlein Orkney June 2005
