Etheridge Translation of the Western Peshitto
A complete English translation of the Western Aramaic Peshitta text. Great for comparison with standard translations from Greek. This translation of the Four Gospels has been made directly from the Syriac. The text chiefly followed is that of Gutbir, 1664, compared with the editions of Paris, G. F. Boderiani, 1584, Walton in the London Polyglot, and Schaaf’s of 1709. The rubrics for the lessons are from Walton. The object of the translator having been to offer in English an accurate representation of these venerable eastern scriptures, the version is as literal as the structure of the two languages seems to admit. English Language Bible Translators
More than 300 Bible or New Testament translations, including the popular King James Version, have been produced in English in the past 600 years. These various translations, both obscure and well-known, were undertaken by diligent individuals working either alone or in committees known to number more than 100. This reference work provides information about the men and women who produced English language translations. Arranged alphabetically by surname, each of the 346 entries includes biographical and vocational information; notes on the various editions produced; samples of their translation; and other pertinent facts. In cases where translations were done by committee, the chairpersons and project initiators are covered. Important anonymous translations are also included.

When I read the book: 'Was the New Testament Really Written in Greek?' I learned that the ""New Testament"" was really translated from the Aramaic Peshitta into Greek. But the only modern English version available was the 1933 Lamsa-very copyright restricted. So I decided to update the 1851 Murdock / 1848 Etheridge versions into modern English. It took 5,000 hours to revise the texts, noting some very interesting differences between the Aramaic and the Greek versions. While I thought that I would find many new insights that were lost in the translation from Aramaic to Greek, I actually found more errors occurring going from Greek into English in most translations My online version has about 2,500 live links to a Greek lexicon for instant verifications. There is no wretched copyright restricting your legal usage, just a required Creative Commons License. There is a sudden interest in the Aramaic text now with several new copyrighted versions available.
