Fallujah

The verbatim play Fallujah, starring Samanthan Morton and with a score by Nitin Sawney, is set to be this year's Guantanamo. This sourcebook documents the testimony that forms the basis of the play, from Iraqi civilians, NGOs, politicians, US and UK military, and journalists involved in the three attacks on Fallujah. It makes a strong case -- based on unpublished evidence gathered by Dr Scilla Elworthy of Peace Direct (and a Nobel Peace-Prize nominee) -- that the US military should be hauled up before the ICC for war crimes. This book will provide the key to the way the verbatim material was put together, to reveal the facts behind the play's fictional form. Also published here is an essay by the playwright and director Jonathan Holmes, and Scilla Elworthy, putting forward the case behind the research and making public the atrocities carried out by the Americans.

'For God's sake hold thy tongue and let me love!' Into Thy Hands takes place in 1610-11 at the high watermark of the English Renaissance and charts the beginning of an English project that would come to dominate the next three centuries. John Donne stood at the nexus of these developments. At various times politician, soldier, poet, musician, lawyer, courtier, theologian and cleric, and as a man born into one of the most distinguished English Catholic families only to die as one of its most renowned Protestants, he lived lives as most shades of English identity. He was also intimately involved with three great English innovations that came to dominate the subsequent life of the country: the Anglican church, epitomised by the King James Bible (1611); the scientific enlightenment, prompted by the work of Francis Bacon and the appearance of Galileo's work in English (also 1611); and the great artistic flourishing in theatre, poetry and music. This play is about the collision of those worlds.

This Old Monmouth of Ours

Hampshire County was formed from the Virginia counties of Augusta and Frederick in 1754. Later, during the American Civil War, it became the first Virginia county wholly in the territory that is now West Virginia. Mrs. Vicki Horton is the compiler of a number of Hampshire County genealogical source record collections, six of which are now available from Clearfield Company (see also items 9734, 9339, 9147, 9336, and 9335). Hampshire County Virginia Personal Property Tax Lists consists of alphabetically arranged lists of all persons who paid a property tax for every year between 1800 and 1814, except for 1808, when no tax was collected. For each taxpayer Mrs. Horton has coded the number of white tithables in the household, the number of horses owned, and the number of slaves, if any. On occasion, persons are identified with supporting information, such as occupation. All the taxpayers are readily identified in the comprehensive index at the back of the volume. Since this volume contains more than 20,000 entries, it is hard to imagine a better census approximation of Hampshire County residents for this time period.
