This fiction is based on the writer's personal experiences of traveling and flamenco, and his view of literature and art. An image leaflet has been laid on the bookshelf in the author’s study since he got it free in the year of 2000 in an art gallery located in the downtown of Portland. The image, which is on the front cover of this book, reminds him of Portland, a city of light and shade, where he happened to see a street flamenco show for the first time in his life. Had he not seen it in Portland, he would not have written this autobiographic story. At that time a flamenco dancer named ‘Helena’ loving Korean paintings was there in the city. Therefore now a literary work on flamenco, art and traveling titled ‘Landscapes Invisible’ is here.

The Massacres at Mt. Halla

In The Massacres at Mt. Halla, Hun Joon Kim presents a compelling story of state violence, human rights advocacy, and transitional justice in South Korea since 1947. The "Jeju 4.3 events" were a series of armed uprisings and counterinsurgency actions that occurred between 1947 and 1954 in the rugged landscape around Mt. Halla in Jeju Province, South Korea. The counterinsurgency strategy was extremely brutal, involving mass arrests and detentions, forced relocations, torture, indiscriminate killings, and many large-scale massacres of civilians. The conflict resulted in an estimated thirty thousand deaths—about 10 percent of the total population of Jeju Province in 1947. News of this enormou...

Farewell Party

Farewell Party is an autobiographical novel and consists of three sections. The first section shows two farewell rituals: an aged man in his late 70s performs in the high mountain before the tombs of his ancestors with a flutist playing Daegeum sanjo (a piece of traditional Korean melodies). The other ritual with a pansori song follows the first one before a tomb on the seashore of an uninhabited island. The book’s second section appears as a flow of the aged man’s consciousness, so it seems not to follow the physical sequence of time. The sea, which used to be near in his boyhood, turns up vividly through his retrospection. Then, unexpectedly, there appears a flamenco dancer. He had met...

This literary work of non-fiction is based on the author's personal journeys alone. He backpacked to the coasts of the country, across the American continent, to London, England, Paris, France and Schwarzwald, Germany. And also to Andalusia, Spain, and Siberia, Russia. Above all, he cannot forget the simple-hearted pilgrimage to Siberia on the Trans-Siberian Railway. He journeyed alone, sometimes meditating on writing, and sometimes on the journey itself. He saw and felt flamenco through his journey into Andalusia, and stepped on the snow-covered birch forest in Siberia that he longed for. Writing this book, JOURNEY INTO DEEP LANSCAPES, he recalled a few of words of Annie Dillard: “Write a...
