This succinct book provides a broad panorama of the key economic policy challenges facing the European Union today. The enlargement of the EU and its lacklustre performance over the last decade in terms of employment and productivity growth have prompted wide-ranging calls for economic reform, both at the EU level and within member states. This volume brings together several leading thinkers in the key areas of policy under discussion, ranging from the institutional design of the enlarged EU for efficient policy making, to the extent and nature of the integration process in markets such as those of energy and financial services. It includes an analysis of the problems of macroeconomic policy co-ordination in the EU and an analysis of the reforms in the labour markets and welfare state institutions. Timely and authoritative, this book is accessibly written and will appeal to a wide policy audience.
'The book offers a full and wide-ranging analysis of the nature and extent of the organisational changes, and of the role played by employability in the new production contexts. Its strengths lie basically in its multidisciplinary approach, which enables the phenomenon of organisational change to be observed from different angles, and in its commitment to a balance between the pursuit of theory and its empirical underpinnings . . . In summary, this is a well-grounded and argued work, both theoretically and empirically, and will be of interest to anyone wishing to understand the complex nature of organisational change, and especially to those who, even though organisational change may not be ...

This volume assesses the complex relationship between the economic and non-economic aspects of labour institutions at various levels. Firstly, the book explores the dilemma which calls for increased flexibility in contractual relationships whilst maintaining the present levels of social protection and job security. The discussion goes on to address the criteria that may provide guidelines for evaluating labour market and social protection system reform policies, and finally, the utility criteria usually used in economic analysis is questioned.
Economists and scholars of management assess the impact of changes in the labor market institutions on the creation of jobs. They focus on public policy and its effects on the adaptation of the labor force to international markets. Several look at how information technology has changed both the internal and external labor markets of companies. Some propose regulatory changes to facilitate competitiveness of both workers and companies. The seven papers are from a June 1997 conference in Barcelona.
