At the turn of the twentieth century, New York City philanthropist, arts patron, and scholar Archer M. Huntington became the foremost collector and face of Spanish art in the United States with the founding of the Hispanic Society of America. This organization, which served as a bridge between artists in Spain and wealthy patrons in the States, was the culmination of a lifetime of scholarship and passion for Spanish culture for Huntington, one he would grapple with throughout his public and intellectual life. Huntington: Founder of the Hispanic Society of America, Patricia Fernández Lorenzo offers, for the first time in English, a complete biography of Huntington, tracing his enthusiasm for Spain and the arts from his childhood, to his marriage to sculptor Anna Hyatt and his crisis of conscience in the wake of the violence of the Spanish Civil War. Drawing heavily from Archer’s correspondence and from Anna Hyatt Huntington’s papers, housed at Syracuse University, Fernández Lorenzo offers a full, deeply human portrait of one of the great patrons of Spanish art, giving a comprehensive look at Huntington’s role in defining Hispanicism in the United States.
Examining the career of a largely unstudied eighteenth-century engraver, this book establishes Jerónimo Antonio Gil, a man immersed within the complicated culture and politics of the Spanish empire, as a major figure in the history of both Spanish and Mexican art. Donahue-Wallace examines Gil as an artist, tracing his education, entry into professional life, appointment to the Mexico City mint, and foundation of the Royal Academy of the Three Noble Arts of San Carlos. She analyzes the archival and visual materials he left behind and, most importantly, she considers the ideas, philosophies, and principles of his era, those who espoused them, and how Gil responded to them. Although frustrated by resistance from the faculty and colleagues he brought to his academy, Gil would leave a lasting influence on the Mexican art scene as local artists continued to benefit from his legacy at the Mexican academy.
This book reconfigures the study of the origins of the Enlightenment in the Spanish Empire. Challenging dominant interpretations of the period, this book shows that early eighteenth-century Spanish authors turned to Enlightenment ideas to reinvent Spain’s role in the European balance of power. And while international law grew to provide a legal framework that could safeguard peace, Spanish officials, diplomats, and authors, hardened by the failure of Spanish diplomacy, sought instead to regulate international relations by drawing on investment, profit, and self-interest. The book shows, on the basis of new archival research, that the Diplomatic Enlightenment sought to turn the Spanish Empire into a space for closer political cooperation with other European and non-European states and empires.
Framing whiteness as a sensorial quality connate with ethical, aesthetic, epistemological, and ontological hierarchies, this edited volume examines how the category of whiteness shaped architectural theories and practices across the early modern period. What was architecture’s role in race-making, constructions of whiteness, and processes of othering more generally? How was whiteness architecturally questioned, reinforced, conceptualized, practiced, and materialized? And how did whiteness intersect with categories such as class, nation, gender, beauty, hygiene, and health?
