The Complete Letters of Henry James, 1883–1884
This volume of The Complete Letters of Henry James, 1883–1884 includes 125 letters, of which 72 are published for the first time, written from January 29, 1884, to November 9, 1884. The letters mark Henry James’s confidence and achievements as an internationally important professional writer, including his participation in conceiving and carrying out with editors and publishers complicated plans to distribute his work and maximize his income. James details his work on mid-career novels The Bostonians and The Princess Casamassima as well as work on a number of tales that would help to define his career. This volume concludes with James’s anticipation of the arrival in England from the United States of his sister, Alice, who would never again return to her homeland.
The Hospitable Canon

Against the Grain
À rebours, Against the Grain or Against Nature in English, is an 1884 novel by Joris-Karl Huysmans. Anti-hero Jean Des Esseintes despises the bourgeois society he lives in and withdraws into the aesthetic and artistic ideals that he has created. Believing the novel would be rejected by both critics and public, Huysman declared: "It will be the biggest fiasco of the year - but I don't care a damn! It will be something nobody has ever done before, and I shall have said what I want to say..." The novel did receive great publicity on its release, but even though it was heavily criticized it also became influential with a new generation of writers and aesthetes.

The Novel of Female Adultery
The novel of adultery is a nineteenth-century form about the experience of women, produced almost exclusively by men. Bill Overton's study is the first to address the gender implications of this form, and the first to write its history. The opening chapter defines the terms 'adultery' and 'novel of adultery', and discusses how the form arose in Continental Europe, but failed to appear in Britain. Successive chapters deal with its development in France, and with examples from Russia, Denmark, Germany, Spain and Portugal.
