On typographical grounds, this ephemeral printing probably dates to around 1860. The subject of the valedictory poem, Joseph Lloyd, was evidently a teacher at Bolton's Bradshawgate Wesleyan School; the poem was composed by one of his pupils. The records of the Bradshawgate Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Bolton, Lancashire, tell us that a Joseph and Mary Ann Lloyd lost their infant son, Joseph, in 1857. The child died at the age of just 1 year 8 months, at the Bradshawgate Wesleyan Chapel - where he had also been baptised - and was buried on 15 July 1857. Perhaps the grief caused by the loss of their child played a part in Joseph and Mary Ann's decision to emigrate and start a new life in Australia. -Douglas Stewart Fine Books, March 2020.
