Frontiers in Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Research

Stem cell and regenerative medicine research is a hot area of research which promises to change the face of medicine as it will be practiced in the years to come. Challenges in the 21st century to combat diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer and related diseases may well be addressed employing stem cell therapies and tissue regeneration. Frontiers in Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Research is essential reading for researchers seeking updates in stem cell therapeutics and regenerative medicine. The sixth volume of this series features reviews on roles of mesenchymal stem cells in cartilage regeneration and bone regeneration, liver regeneration, cardiogenesis, cardiomyocyte differentiation, and regenerative therapy for neurodegenerative disorders.

Scaffolds in Tissue EngineeringMaterials, Technologies and Clinical Applications

Biomaterials are often designed to act as scaffolds, i.e., 3D porous templates that support and stimulate the growth of healthy tissue and then safely dissolve once they have performed their functions. This book provides a picture of the current state of the art in the field of scaffolds for tissue engineering, highlighting the potential associated to the latest scientific and technological advancements. The former part of the book focuses on the repair of "hard" tissues (primarily bone) by means of bioceramic/glass scaffolds, and the latter deals with the applications of polymeric scaffolds for regenerating "soft" tissues and structures including the peripheral nerve, heart, gastric mucosa and pancreas. Special emphasis is given to the challenges associated to scaffold manufacturing, biomimetic properties and cell-scaffold interactions.

Slavery and Identity

Using both primary archival and printed sources, Mieko Nishida examines the perspectives of slaves, ex-slaves, and free-born people of color and the critical factors that affected their lives and self-perceptions. The book offers a new window on slave life in nineteenth-century Salvador, Brazil, and illustrates the difficulty of generalizing about New World slave societies.".

The Brazil reviewed in this book is a flourishing nation, and with a sustained economic development, its GDP increased approximately 50% between 2000 and 2010. Nowadays it possesses multiple initiatives to increase advanced human capital, and therefore reverse a limited scientific production, perhaps one of the anchors of its past as a producer of raw materials with no value added. It is also the 'B' within BRIC, an acronym that refers to Brazil, Russia, India, and China, countries which are considered at a similar stage in advanced economic development, although recent. However, it is also the BRIC country with the highest Gini index (53/100), meaning, with the greatest inequality between the incomes of its citizens, and has a literacy rate of only 91%, this data point us to an important social gap. This and other challenges are those which Brazil must face.

Glass Science and its Applications - II

Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters BCI (WoS). The present special topic volume entitled “Glass Science and its Applications – II” covers different glasses and glass ceramic materials for technological and biomedical applications. In this special issue, the first review paper reports on the linear and non- linear properties of different materials. The second paper reports the visible-NIR luminescence and time-resolved emission spectral profiles of Nd3+, and Er3+ doped silver zinc borate glasses. The third paper, As2O3 glasses were identified as the low-loss materials for long-distance optical transmission and CuO containing glasses are also draw special attention because of the p-type se...
