The Wealth of History of the Small African Twin-Island State São Tomé and Príncipe
The twin-island state of São Tomé and Príncipe, located in the Gulf of Guinea, is the second smallest African country, after the Seychelles. The essays of this collection highlight crucial periods and important events in the country’s varied and eventful history, which spans more than 500 years. Portugal colonised the islands twice in significantly different economic and historical contexts: first, in the sixteenth century during its maritime expansion, and secondly in the latter half of the nineteenth century, at the beginning of the colonisation of Africa by European powers. In these two periods, the small islands played a pioneering role in the economic history of sugar and cocoa, respectively. Following independence in 1975, the country’s economic development has fallen far short of expectations and consequently its dependence on foreign aid has persisted. Nevertheless, external observers have considered the archipelago of 225,000 inhabitants to be a model of parliamentary democracy in Africa.
Cosmopolitanism in the Portuguese-Speaking World

Indefinição de sobremaneira contraproducente face à sua importância funcional permanente como garante da expressão da vontade coletiva de cada sociedade anónima. O presente texto incide sobre as causas extintivas dessa mesma permanência, procedendo a uma individual análise crítica (e a sua adequação prática) de cada advento extintivo em razão da possibilidade, oportunidade, meios e consequência. Por razões de coerência argumentativa previamente ensaia-se uma construção identitária da respetiva figura tentando, dogmaticamente, responder à enigmática pergunta: "O que é o presidente da mesa da assembleia geral?".

A governação societária é influenciada pelo conceito sustentabilidade que determina que a empresa societária passe a estar atenta à sua triple bottom line (económica, social e ambiental) e deixe o seu autismo, focando-se nos seus stakeholders. É nesta perspetiva que se propõe uma viagem pela corporate governance, agregada em quatro pilares fundamentais: estrutura orgânica, mecanismos de controlo interno, de controlo externo e de responsabilização. Deste exercício resultou verificada a existência de um 5o pilar da temática da governação societária, que deve nortear os pilares anteriores: o interesse social comum a shareholders e stakeholders, que só pode ser encontrado na perdurabilidade da rentabilidade, ou seja, na sustentabilidade, não só da sociedade, mas de algo que é a sua alma: a empresa.
