This book reviews soil biodiversity and related ecological processes in one of the key biodiversity hotspots of the world, the Amazon, and nearby regions of Brazil. It covers both the tropical savannah and rainforests. Chapters describe the biology, ecology, taxonomy, geographic distribution and sampling methods for the most important soil functional groups. The book is based on a project "Conservation and Sustainable Management of Below-Ground Biodiversity", executed by TSBF-CIAT with co-financing from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implementation support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Natural Diversity in the New Millennium

Natural Diversity in the New Millennium

Natural diversity has been extensively used to understand plant biology and improve crops. However, studies were commonly based on visual phenotypes or on a few measurable parameters. Nowadays, a large number of parameters can be measured thanks to next generation sequencing, metabolomics, proteomics, and transcriptomics thus providing an unprecedented resolution in the detection of natural diversity. This enhanced resolution offers new possibilities in terms of understanding plant biology. Technology advances also contribute to a better assessment of the biodiversity loss currently taking place. Hence, the topic presents an overview on efforts for maintaining biological diversity in crops, on possibilities offered by recent technologies in the assessment of natural variation, and ends with examples of the diversity found even at the cellular level.

This book details the plant-assisted remediation method, “phytoremediation”, which involves the interaction of plant roots and associated rhizospheric microorganisms for the remediation of soil contaminated with high levels of metals, pesticides, solvents, radionuclides, explosives, crude oil, organic compounds and various other contaminants. Each chapter highlights and compares the beneficial and economical alternatives of phytoremediation to currently practiced soil removal and burial practices.

In the post-COVID-19 era, it is essential to adhere to an international framework for sustainable development goals (SDGs), which requires the management of the economic, social, and environmental shocks and disasters. While many have suffered across the world from the COVID-19 pandemic, these SDGs work to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages, as well as inclusive and sustainable economic growth. Frameworks for Sustainable Development Goals to Manage Economic, Social, and Environmental Shocks and Disasters provides an updated view of the newest trends, novel practices, and latest tendencies concerning the benefits, advantages, opportunities, and challenges of building an internationally successful framework for SDGs. Covering topics such as business longevity, green innovation, and vaccination willingness, this premier reference source is an excellent resource for government officials, business leaders and executives, human resource managers, economists, sociologists, students and faculty of higher education, librarians, researchers, and academicians.
