Women's Access to Higher Education in Africa
This book addresses the gender divide in access to higher education and the Ugandan situation. It examines theories of girls' education, human capital, gender inequality and gender-development, bringing views from Africa and its institutions to debates often constructed and conducted in the West. Whilst commending the work of women's movements and NGO's in furthering the educational cause, it criticises fashionable neo-liberal economic/educational policies which are diverting researchers not institutions, thus diminishing local universities and women. The volume also presents the results of a survey of female undergraduates at the University of Makerere, which give rise to discussions about family, societal, and institutional influences on women's access to higher education. African Women's Movements

Using her experience of living under apartheid and witnessing its downfall and the subsequent creation of new governments in South Africa, the author examines and compares gender inequality in societies undergoing political and economic transformation. By applying this process of legal transformation as a paradigm, the author applies this model to Afghanistan. These two societies serve as counterpoints through which the book engages, in a nuanced and novel way, with the many broader issues that flow from the attempts in newly democratic societies to give effect to the promise of gender equality. Developing the idea of ’conditional interdependence’, the book suggests a new approach based on the communitarian values which underpin newly democratic societies and would allow women’s rights to gain momentum and reap greater benefits. Broad in its thematic approach, the book generates challenging and complex questions about the achievement of gender equality. Double-Edged Politics on Women’s Rights in the MENA Region
While the Arab Uprisings presented new opportunities for the empowerment of women, the sidelining of women remains a constant risk in the post-revolutionist MENA countries. Changes in the position of women are crucial to the reconfiguration of state-society relations and to the discussions between Islamist and secular trends. Theoretically framed and based on new empirical data, this edited volume explores women’s activism and political representation as well as discursive changes, with a particular focus on secular and Islamic feminism, and changes in popular opinions on women’s position in society. While the contributors express optimistic as well as more pessimistic views for the future, they agree that this is a period of uncertainty for women in the region, and that support by ruling elites towards women’s rights remains ambiguous and double-edged.
