The Ones Who Remember

How do you talk about and make sense of your life when you grew up with parents who survived the most unimaginable horrors of family separation, systematic murder and unending encounters of inhumanity? Sixteen authors reveal the challenges and gifts of living with the aftermath of their parents’ inconceivable experiences during the Holocaust. The Ones Who Remember: Second-Generation Voices of the Holocaust provides a window into the lived experience of sixteen different families grappling with the legacy of genocide. Each author reveals the many ways their parents’ Holocaust traumas and survival seeped into their souls and then affected their subsequent family lives – whether they knew...

A Wall of Two

"Ilona Karmel once wrote of the work of turning 'the cold, old-fashioned, iron key of memory.' These recovered poems of Ilona and her elder sister Henia open the space behind memory's door, and it is on fire with defiant passion -with longing, with terror, and the raw drive to bear witness in the one way possible to the life-in-death of the camps. Henia writes, 'These poems came about when I was still creating myself.' The two sisters here are speaking themselves and each other into existence; and this essential work of claiming our humanity has rarely been so costly, and so moving."—Allen Grossman "The book is a riveting read. The subject, of course, is very compelling and the poems move with great plainness, vividness, and force. The girls survived, though barely, because they were young and strong and because the German war machine needed their bodies. The book is artfully designed to convey the arc of their story from capture to freedom in 1946, and there is, as far as I know, nothing quite like it in the vast literature of the Holocaust. A unique and moving book, of historical significance, rendered into English by one of our most gifted American poets."—Robert Hass

This directory was created to assist psychology graduate students, faculty, and clinical supervisors in identifying predoctoral internships and post-doctoral fellowships that provide specific training emphases in clinical child and/or pediatric psychology. The directory is not intended as a substitute for the Directory of Internship and Post-Doctoral Programs in Professional Psychology published by the Association of Psychology Post-Doctoral and Internship Center. Rather, it is intended as a complementary resource to the APIC directory. All programs that were self-defined as offering training in "clinical child psychology" and/or "pediatric psychology" are included. Although not an official publication of the American Psychological Association or APA's Division 12, this directory was established and completed with the support of the Section on Clinical Child Psychology (Section I) and the Society of Pediatric Psychology (Section V) of the Division of Clinical Psychology of the APA.

Parenting Matters

Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being d...
