There was a time when abnormal child psychology was the stepchild of abnormal psychology, with perhaps one or two chapters in an entire advanced textbook devoted to children. Given the explosive amount of new research on child development in general since the 1980s, "stepchild" is obviously no longer a valid characterization. Indeed, in the last 15 years, many new journals devoted to childhood problems have made their appearance on library bookshelves. The first edition of this book was assembled in an effort to integrate the empirical and clinical literatures and show the advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate student the breadth and depth of our existing knowledge about the disorder...

Handbook of Clinical Behavioral Pediatrics

Since 1978, the editors have collaborated on several research projects and spent many hours at conventions discussing research, graduate education, and patient care. The idea for this volume arose when we both concluded that the area of behavioral pediatrics needed a "how to" book. Several important scholarly re views had recently appeared. They presented excellent summary information concerning the general assumptions and theories underlying the area of behav ioral medicine with children. But these volumes devote very little attention to the application of clinical methods. What was needed, we thought, was a book that would allow graduate students and practicing clinicians the opportunity to peer into the minds of eminent practitioners and understand their thinking. Thus the book was conceived. Editing books represents a special kind of challenge. One has to "sell" an idea to a group of distinguished colleagues. They have to believe enough in that idea to devote the considerable time and effort necessary to bring thought into reality. In this case, there were two ideas we tried to sell to our colleagues.

The causes of child abuse and neglect have been major topics of study since the 1960s, but treatment strategies, research, and legal issues have only received concentrated attention since the '80s. The leading figures in these efforts have contributed to this handbook, a state-of-the-art compilation of their findings that also includes writings on associated cultural issues , youth violence, sexual abuse, and child development. Both a text and a reference, the volume is uniquely founded on empirical research.

Handbook of Depression in Children and Adolescents

Anyone who has ever been close to a seriously depressed child has undoubtedly been affected by the youngster's vulnerability, misery, and pain. Indeed, it is much like caring for a child who is in physical pain. For the child in the depths of depression, no activity is fun, nothing can be enjoyed, and no one can provide enough consolation or comfort. At times, the youngster may cry or whimper. There may be fits of defiance or rage and sometimes withdrawal into a numb, sullen silence. A child in this state tries the patience of parents and siblings. Remedies of every sort are tried, including gifts, punishments, bribes, lectures, pleading, and a host of others. Such efforts occasionally provi...
