Current Developments in Atherosclerosis Research
Atherosclerosis is a degenerative condition in which arteries build up deposits called plaques (atheromas) which consist of lipids (mainly cholesterol), connective tissue and smooth muscle cells originating from the arterial wall. Plaques develop quietly over a period of years and are unnoticeable until there is an interruption in the normal flow of blood. Plaques may partially or totally block the blood's flow through an artery. Two things that can happen where plaques occur are: bleeding (haemorrhage) into the plaque; and formation of a blood clot (thrombus) on the plaque's surface. Atherosclerosis affects large and medium-sized arteries. The type of artery and where the plaque develops varies with each person. Atherosclerosis research has witnessed startling progress in recent years, partially due to new drugs as well as to new breakthroughs in molecular medicine.
Cancer
In this book the authors suggest that a 'dysmethylation syndrome' may affect the vital regulation of cell growth, metabolism and mitosis, and may then lead to cancer. These dysmethylations (which may be hyper- or hypo-methylations) affect not only the expression of the genes involved in growth and mitosis, but also the activity of enzymes such as phosphatase PP2A, which is assembled after methylation. This phosphatase limits the effects of the trophic kinases activated by growth factors or oncogenes. In the neurones, the syndrome associated with a deficit in the methylation of phosphatase and other substrates favours the accumulation of hyperphosphorylated proteins, as in Alzheimer's disease. This would mean that cancer and Alzheimer's disease, as well as Biermer's anaemia, are linked to cellular methylations.

Cigarette Smoke and Oxidative Stress
The mechanism by which cigarette smoke causes or contributes to inflammatory diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease and cancer remains unclear. Simulation and Modeling Methodologies, Technologies and Applications
This Proceedings book reports on new and innovative solutions regarding methodologies and applications of modeling and simulation. It includes a set of selected, extended papers from the 6th International Conference on Simulation and Modeling Methodologies, Technologies and Applications (SIMULTECH 2016), held in Lisbon, Portugal, from 29 to 31 July, 2016. The conference brought together researchers, engineers and practitioners interested in methodologies and applications of modeling and simulation. SIMULTECH 2016 received 76 submissions from 35 countries and all continents. After a double-blind paper review performed by the Program Committee, 18% were accepted as full papers and thus selected for oral presentations. Additional papers were accepted as short papers and posters. A further selection was made after the Conference, based also on the assessment of presentation quality and audience interest, so that this book includes the extended and revised versions of the very best papers from SIMULTECH 2016.
